Leaf- and ecosystem-scale water use efficiency and their controlling factors of a kiwifruit orchard in the humid region of Southwest China

Shouzheng Jiang et al.

Summary: The study found that leaf and ecosystem water, carbon and WUE are significantly influenced by factors such as photosynthetic active radiation and stomatal conductance, while air temperature, leaf water vapor deficit and stomatal conductance affect WUEi through leaf water consumption. Global total radiation, air temperature, wind speed and vapor pressure deficit are dominant climatic factors affecting evapotranspiration and gross primary productivity in the orchard ecosystem.

Transcription factors AcERF74/75 respond to waterlogging stress and trigger alcoholic fermentation-related genes in kiwifruit

Jiao Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the molecular mechanism of kiwifruit's response to waterlogging stress. The researchers found that waterlogging significantly inhibited root growth and increased the levels of endogenous acetaldehyde and ethanol in kiwifruit plants. Genome-wide analysis revealed changes in genes related to glycolysis/gluconeogenesis and transcription factors. Further experiments demonstrated that two transcription factors, AcERF74 and AcERF75, directly upregulated the expression of alcohol dehydrogenase (AcADH1), leading to increased ethanol content. These findings provide insights into the response of kiwifruit to waterlogging stress and the role of transcriptional activators in alcoholic fermentation.

Effects of water deficit at different growth stages under drip irrigation on fruit quality of citrus in the humid areas of South China

Fei Chen et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of deficit irrigation at different growth stages on the physical and chemical quality of citrus under drip irrigation. The results showed that deficit irrigation at the early and middle growth stages significantly improved the physical and chemical quality of citrus, while deficit irrigation at the late growth stage primarily affected the chemical quality. Among all the treatments, the IV-D30% treatment showed the most significant improvement in fruit quality.

Kiwifruit ( Actinidia spp.): A review of chemical diversity and biological activities

Sunan Wang et al.

Summary: Kiwifruit is a commercially important fruit crop with various dietary nutrients and functional ingredients. It exhibits multiple health benefits, but evidence of its impact on preventing and treating chronic diseases is not yet clear. Future research should focus on sustainable utilization of kiwifruit resources, purification of bioactive compounds, and the physiological mechanisms and clinical significance of kiwifruits.

Responses of growth, fruit yield, quality and water productivity of greenhouse tomato to deficit drip irrigation

You Wu et al.

Summary: The research found that with increasing irrigation amount, aboveground biomass, leaf area index, plant height, and fruit yield all increased. However, the lowest levels of soluble solids, vitamin C, and soluble sugar in tomato fruits were found under the W1 irrigation regime. Deficit drip irrigation has the potential to support tomato growth, improve marketable yield and water use efficiency.

1-MCP Regulates Ethanol Fermentation and GABA Shunt Pathway Involved in Kiwifruit Quality During Postharvest Storage

Maratab Ali et al.

Summary: 1-MCP treatment significantly reduced respiration rate, ethylene production, decay rate, and ascorbic acid loss, and delayed the decline in firmness and titratable acidity, as well as the increase in total soluble solids in kiwifruit. Furthermore, 1-MCP treatment effectively inhibited the increases in contents of acetaldehyde, ethanol, and GABA along with the suppressed activities of key enzymes involved in ethanol fermentation and GABA shunt pathway, thereby delaying the ripening process and avoiding alcohol off-flavor development to maintain kiwifruit quality.
