An insight on microbial degradation of benzo[a]pyrene: current status and advances in research

Arjita Punetha et al.

Summary: Benzo[a]pyrene (BaP), a high molecular weight polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon, is formed from incomplete combustion of organic substances. It can bind to DNA and cause cancer. Removing BaP from the environment is essential, but it is a complex and tedious process due to its recalcitrant nature. Although physical and chemical technologies for BaP degradation have been developed, they are neither cost-effective nor environmentally friendly. Microbial degradation of BaP has gained attention due to the high microbial diversity and potential for sustainable degradation. However, bio-availability and soil properties limit microbial degradation. Bio-augmentation and bio-stimulation have been used to enhance BaP degradation, and advanced technologies like omics and nano-technology show promise for future microbial degradation of BaP and related compounds.

Shifts in microbial community structure and function in polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon contaminated soils at petrochemical landfill sites revealed by metagenomics

Jiayou Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the microbial community structures, potential functions, and PAH degradation-related genes in PAH-polluted soils at a petrochemical landfill in Beijing, China. The results revealed that PAHs could have adverse effects on soil ecosystems and impact the microbial community structures, while microorganisms would adapt by changing their physiological functions to resist pollutant stress.

Surfactant-aided mycoremediation of soil contaminated with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons

Abiram Karanam Rathankumar et al.

Summary: Remediation of persistent polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) contaminated soil has become a major challenge in recent years. The application of surfactants along with wood assisted fungal system can enhance the PAHs remediation rate, and the addition of surface-active compounds can significantly increase enzyme production for degradation.

Influences of kaolinite and montmorillonite on benzo[a]pyrene biodegradation by Paracoccus aminovorans HPD-2 and the underlying interface interaction mechanisms

Xinhong Gan et al.

Summary: Kaolinite inhibits the degradation of benzo[a]pyrene by inhibiting bacterial growth, while montmorillonite promotes the degradation by increasing the bio-accessibility. The differential effects of clay minerals on polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon biodegradation can be explained by bacterial growth, bio-accessibility, interface interaction, and buffering effect.

How important is abiotic dissipation in natural attenuation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in soil?

Jinbo Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the abiotic dissipation of PAHs and anthracene in soil, revealing significant contributions to the attenuation process with a wide range of contribution rates depending on the type of compound. The findings suggest that the abiotic dissipation is influenced by both molecule properties and soil types, providing valuable insights into the role of abiotic dissipation in PAH attenuation in soil.

A synthetic quality index to evaluate the functional stability of soil microbial communities after perturbations

E. Picariello et al.

Summary: The study investigated the stability of enzyme activities in different forest soils after PAH addition, finding higher functional stability in soils with more recalcitrant organic matter. Degradation rates of PAHs slowed with increasing molecular weight. High microbial resistance to PAH perturbation was observed in soils with broad scale enzyme activity, while hydrolytic functional stability showed resistance and resilience to PAH contamination in all soils due to enzyme diversity.
