Carbon footprint and water footprint of rice and wheat production in Punjab, India

Durba Kashyap et al.

Summary: This study quantified the carbon and water footprints of rice and wheat production in five agro-climatic zones of Punjab, India, revealing that rice and wheat had respective carbon footprints of 8.80 and 4.18 t CO(2)eq/ha. Nitrogen fertilizer use was identified as a major hotspot for carbon footprint mitigation, with large farms having lower carbon footprints per tonne compared to small farms.

A review of trends and drivers of greenhouse gas emissions by sector from 1990 to 2018

William F. Lamb et al.

Summary: Global greenhouse gas emissions from five economic sectors show limited progress in reducing emissions. Decarbonization in energy systems is observed in Europe and North America, while fossil-based energy systems continue to expand in rapidly industrializing regions. Strong demand in Asia drives emissions growth in industry, buildings, and transport sectors, while agricultural expansion leads to emissions increases in tropical forest regions.

Energy and carbon footprints for irrigation water in the lower Indus basin in Pakistan, comparing water supply by gravity fed canal networks and groundwater pumping

A. W. Siyal et al.

Summary: This study compares the energy and carbon footprints of irrigation water provided by gravity-fed irrigation networks and groundwater pumping systems. Groundwater, while only contributing 6% to total irrigation water supply in the lower Indus basin, dominates energy use and CO2 emissions. Shifting from groundwater pumping to properly maintaining gravity-fed canal systems can decrease energy use and CO2 emissions, while increasing surface water availability.

Lessons From the Aftermaths of Green Revolution on Food System and Health

Daisy A. John et al.

Summary: Food production has made various advancements in developing countries globally, including India. The introduction of the green revolution in India reduced rural poverty, but did not improve health outcomes. While some interventions of the green revolution were successful, they also had negative impacts, highlighting the need for a review of these interventions.
