Evaluating the Impact of Nutrient Doses on Biostimulation of Petroleum Hydrocarbon Biodegradation in Cold Region Soils

Anirban Kundu et al.

Summary: Biostimulation with nitrogen and phosphorus is commonly used to enhance the biodegradation of petroleum hydrocarbons in contaminated soils in sub-Arctic regions. However, our study suggests that high nutrient doses may not necessarily lead to better degradation, and low nutrient doses can be equally or more effective.

Soil microbiota and microarthropod communities in oil contaminated sites in the European Subarctic

E. N. Melekhina et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the effects of oil contamination and removal of polluted soil in extreme northern taiga. Removal of the contaminated soil layer was partially effective in reducing oil concentration, but did not prevent changes in microbial composition or soil fauna.

Full-scale bioremediation of diesel-polluted soil in an Arctic landfarm

Anders R. Johnsen et al.

Summary: The experimental landfarm tested for the capacity to biodegrade oil-polluted soil under high-Arctic tundra conditions showed a rapid degradation of diesel but with a recalcitrant fraction remaining after five years. Optimization of microbial diesel biodegradation through yearly addition of fertilizer, plowing, and irrigation proved to be effective in removing a significant portion of the diesel from the soil. Oil-degrading microorganisms present in the landfarm showed large population increases, indicating their role in the biodegradation process.

Impact of diesel and biodiesel contamination on soil microbial community activity and structure

Eduardo K. Mitter et al.

Summary: The study found higher microbial activity in biodiesel-contaminated soils compared to diesel-contaminated ones, while contaminated soils had lower bacterial richness and diversity. Actinobacteria were predominant in control samples, whereas Proteobacteria were predominantly observed in diesel and biodiesel contaminated soils. Genus-level analysis showed Rhodococcus and Pseudomonas spp. were highly selected in diesel and biodiesel amendments, respectively. Predicted functional profiles based on hydrocarbon-degrading enzymes showed significant differences between contaminated soils, with Burkholderiaceae, Novosphingobium, Anaeromyxobacter, Pseudomonas and Rhodococcus identified as main bacterial taxa contributing to these enzymes.

Transformation of n-alkanes from plant to soil: a review

Carrie L. Thomas et al.

Summary: The study reviewed the formation and transformation of n-alkanes in soil organic matter (SOM), finding a general decrease in n-alkane concentration with time or depth, and preferential degradation of odd-chain length and shorter chain length n-alkanes. It also highlighted the lack of data transparency and standardization in lipid biomarker studies.
