Metal and metalloid pollution in shelf sediments from the Gulf of C′adiz (Southwest Spain): Long-lasting effects of a historical mining area

V. Besada et al.

Summary: This study assessed the metal pollution status of the Gulf of C' adiz by measuring metal and metalloid concentrations in surface sediments. The distribution of metals such as Cu, Cd, Zn, Hg, and As was mainly associated with historical mining activities, while Ni, Cr, and Mn showed a different distribution pattern explained by geochemical factors. The comparison of metal concentrations with sediment quality guidelines indicated adverse ecological effects in a specific area. These results highlight the ongoing issue of metal pollution in the Gulf of C' adiz.

A time-series of heavy metal geochemistry in sediments of Galveston Bay estuary, Texas, 2017-2019

Amanda M. Lopez et al.

Summary: Galveston Bay is an anthropogenic-influenced estuary with high concentrations of heavy metals in sediment, especially in the eastern bay. Temporal variations in sediment metal concentrations are primarily controlled by river discharge, with stable levels of some metals in the 20th century and increasing levels of others in recent years.

Anthropogenic metal loads in nearshore sediment along the coast of China mainland interacting with provincial socioeconomics in the period 1980-2020

Xun Liu et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the metal loads in coastal sediment in different provinces of China and found regional variations in metal loads, which were related to characteristic industries. Guangdong Province had a high risk of metal loads in nearshore sediment, while other provinces had lower risks. Furthermore, this study identified a significant relationship between metal loads in nearshore sediment and non-agricultural GDP per capita of non-agricultural population/urban population percentile.

Heavy metal pollution assessment in coastal sediments and bioaccumulation on seagrass (Enhalus acoroides) of Palau

Hyeryeong Jeong et al.

Summary: The study showed that heavy metals in coastal sediments and seagrass mainly come from natural sources, with As and Hg posing the highest ecological risk. The concentrations of Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, and Hg were higher in leaves of E. acoroides than in roots, and Zn, Cd, and Hg had high bioconcentration factors.

An assessment of heavy metal contamination in the marine soil/sediment of Coles Bay Area, Svalbard, and Greater Bay Area, China: a baseline survey from a rapidly developing bay

Ho Man Leung et al.

Summary: The research investigates the pollution levels of tin (Sn), arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), and zinc (Zn) in soil/sediment samples collected from Coles Bay Area (CBA) in Svalbard and Great Bay Area (GBA) in China. Cadmium concentration was identified as the common dominant factor impacting soil/sediment quality in both study sites.
