A combined approach to cliff characterization: Cliff Stability index

Rafael J. Bergillos et al.

Summary: This work presents a multidisciplinary method to characterize coastal cliff environments, combining engineering and geomorphological approaches to define exposure levels based on wave power and cliff stability index. Application to a study site in NW Spain shows that the two perspectives, engineering and geomorphological, yield similar results in some sections of the study area.

Coastal vs volcanic processes: Procida Island as a case of complex morpho-evolutive response

Pietro P. C. Aucelli et al.

Summary: This study presents a comprehensive geomorphological analysis of the coastal area of Procida Island, Italy, revealing the main coastal changes that occurred during the Holocene. Through various survey methods and the integration of data from remote sensing interpretation, morphological, archaeological, and geological markers, the location and approximate age of paleo-shore platforms were determined. The study found that volcano-tectonic subsidence exacerbated the retreat of sea cliffs and contributed to the multi-cyclic formation of coastal landforms.

Coastal Sensitivity/Vulnerability Characterization and Adaptation Strategies: A Review

Giorgio Anfuso et al.

Summary: Coastal areas are vulnerable environments that require special attention to preserve ecosystems and human activities. The Coastal Vulnerability Index (CVI) is a commonly used approach that considers various factors affecting coastal vulnerability and susceptibility, leading to the implementation of specific strategies to enhance coastal resilience. Solutions range from hard infrastructure (e.g., groins, breakwaters) to soft interventions (e.g., beach nourishment) to better prepare coastal areas for potential risks.

Sea-level rise impact and future scenarios of inundation risk along the coastal plains in Campania (Italy)

Gianluigi Di Paola et al.

Summary: This study evaluates future scenarios of inundation risk along the main alluvial coastal plains of the Campania region (Italy), taking into account global projections and local subsidence trends. Factors such as the distribution of natural and anthropic assets, as well as local social vulnerability, are considered to calculate the overall risk and raise awareness among policymakers and local administrators about the potential impacts of climate change in coastal areas.

Geomorphological Approach to Cliff Instability in Volcanic Slopes: A Case Study from the Gulf of Naples (Southern Italy)

Giuseppe Di Crescenzo et al.

Summary: This paper addresses the issue of cliff stability, proposing a geomorphological zonation of a sea cliff in Italy as a case study. Through detailed geological and geomorphological analysis, a map showing the geomorphological zonation of the sea cliff was derived to aid in planning intervention works and organizing prevention plans aimed at risk mitigation.

Recent Shoreline Changes Due to High-Angle Wave Instability along the East Coast of Lingayen Gulf in the Philippines

Takaaki Uda et al.

Summary: Under high-angle wave conditions, small perturbations on the shoreline can lead to the formation of sand spits, impacting shore protection significantly. The study in Lingayen Gulf revealed that a large aspect ratio contributes to frequent shoreline instability and sand spit formation, with the rate of longshore sand transport playing a crucial role in shaping the coastline.
