Performance comparison of silicone and low-density polyethylene as passive samplers in a global monitoring network for aquatic organic contaminants

Jaromir Sobotka et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the trend of freely dissolved HOC concentrations in global surface waters through the Aquatic Global Passive Sampling initiative (AQUA-GAPS). The results showed that both silicone (SSP) and low-density polyethylene (PE) sheets can be used as samplers, but silicone-based samplers are recommended for future monitoring due to their practicality and reliability.

Summary: The study demonstrates the feasibility of using PUF-PAS for air SVOC analysis in high-mountain areas, with in-situ calibration using PRCs providing suitable sampling rates. Results from PUF-PAS showed good agreement with those from PUF-AAS, with minor deviations observed for PAHs due to seasonal concentration variations.

Occurrence and air-water diffusive exchange legacy persistent organic pollutants in an oligotrophic north Patagonian lake

Thais Luarte et al.

Summary: This study focused on the occurrence and diffusive air-water exchange of POPs in Panguipulli Lake in northern Patagonia, Chile. The results indicated that the lake acted as a secondary source of atmospheric POPs, mainly PCBs and some OCPs, with beta-HCH showing net deposition during the sampling period.

Changes and distribution of gas-phase polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and organochlorine compounds in a high-mountain gradient over a three-year period (Pyrenees, 2017-2020)

Raimon M. Prats et al.

Summary: The study measured the atmospheric gas-phase concentrations of organic pollutants in six high-mountain sites in the Pyrenees. The results showed that despite a decrease in concentration compared to 20 years ago, these compounds still pose a risk to remote continental environments due to long-range atmospheric transport.

Temporal dynamics and ecotoxicological risk assessment of personal care products, phthalate ester plasticizers, and organophosphorus flame retardants in water from Lake Victoria, Uganda

Florence Nantaba et al.

Summary: The study investigated the presence of 25 organic micropollutants in water samples from five bays in the Uganda sector of Lake Victoria, including personal care products, phthalate ester plasticizers, and organophosphorus flame retardants. Different concentrations of organic micropollutants were found in different bays, posing a high ecotoxic risk to aquatic organisms.

Spatial distribution and air-water exchange of organophosphate esters in the lower Great Lakes*

Yuxin Ma et al.

Summary: Organophosphate esters (OPEs) were detected at elevated concentrations in the Great Lakes region, particularly chlorinated compounds, with some dependence on temperature. The main sources were likely anthropogenic influence from surrounding rural and urban areas. Nearly all OPEs underwent net gas-phase deposition to the lakes, dominated by TCEP and TCPPs.

Changes in Urban Gas-Phase Persistent Organic Pollutants During the COVID-19 Lockdown in Barcelona

Raimon M. Prats et al.

Summary: During the lockdown in Barcelona, concentrations of CO, NO, NO2, and PM10 in the atmosphere significantly decreased while O-3 increased. Certain compounds like PeCB, HCB, and PAHs showed even stronger decreases in concentration, possibly due to reduced traffic mobility, decreased urban waste generation, and industrial emissions.

Atmospheric deposition of semivolatile organic pollutants in European high mountains: Sources, settling and chemical degradation

Summary: The study found various pollutants in the atmospheric deposition samples collected from high mountain lakes, some of which originated from long-range atmospheric transport while others came from regional sources. Wet deposition was the primary process for the removal of PAHs, HCHs, and HCB in the atmosphere.

Passive sampling and benchmarking to rank HOC levels in the aquatic environment

Ian John Allan et al.

Summary: The study introduces an innovative method for identifying and ranking hydrophobic organic contaminants levels in water using a 10-year passive sampling dataset. It shows that certain chemical concentration ratios in the water phase remain relatively constant, allowing for the identification of contamination sites and establishing benchmark levels for other organic pollutants.
