Metagenomics Analysis to Investigate the Microbial Communities and Their Functional Profile During Cyanobacterial Blooms in Lake Varese

Isabella Sanseverino et al.

Summary: Toxic cyanobacterial blooms are caused by the mass proliferation of photosynthetic prokaryotic microorganisms in water environments, posing serious threats to aquatic organisms and human health. A study in Lake Varese, northern Italy, found Cyanobacteria to be more abundant in the lake, with the blooms mainly dominated by the species Lyngbya robusta. Additionally, a specific functional profile characterized the bacterial population along the water column, and a large and diverse phage population was also identified in the shotgun data analysis.

Holistic approach to chemical and microbiological quality of aquatic ecosystems impacted by wastewater effluent discharges

Isabella Sanseverino et al.

Summary: Wastewater treatment plants play a critical role in reducing pollutant load in the environment, but they still pose a potential risk as sources of contaminants. This study assessed the efficiency of pollutant and bacteria removal in a WWTP case study using a holistic approach. The results showed significant reduction in pollutant burden, but complete removal was not achieved.

Heavy metal pollution promotes antibiotic resistance potential in the aquatic environment

Majid Komijani et al.

Summary: The study identified a strong correlation between waste discharge, heavy metal concentration, and the abundance of ARGs in lakes, with heavy metals showing a stronger impact than antibiotics. Global lake data also confirmed that overuse of antibiotics and discharge of heavy metals are increasing the distribution of ARGs.

Knowledge gaps in the assessment of antimicrobial resistance in surface waters

Magdalena Niegowska et al.

Summary: The spread of antibiotic resistance in the water environment is a significant issue with many knowledge gaps that need to be addressed. Understanding the impact of antibiotics and heavy metals on aquatic environments and their relationship to antimicrobial resistance is crucial for effective risk assessment and prevention strategies.
