Effect of solar radiation on natural organic matter composition in surface waters and resulting impacts on drinking water treatment

I Slavik et al.

Summary: Solar radiation experiments have demonstrated a shift in the composition of natural organic matter (NOM), with a decrease in the concentration of high molecular weight (HMW) molecules and an increase in the low molecular weight (LMW) fraction. The coagulation performance for removing dissolved organic carbon (DOC) was found to be lower for irradiated waters, which can be attributed to the increase in LMW concentration caused by photochemical reactions induced by solar radiation. An adaptation of water treatment processes, particularly ozonation-biofiltration, is considered as a promising solution to cope with climate change-related challenges in drinking water treatment.

Summary: This study aims to assess the feasibility of a hybrid ozonation/nanofiltration membrane process to simultaneously oxidize and reject contaminants while reducing membrane fouling. By using an innovative monophasic configuration with pre-ozonated water and H2O2-doped water, the study successfully avoided ozone-enriched gas flow in the membrane cell and achieved high ozone removal yields.

Summary: This paper introduces the application of biological activated carbon (BAC) process in eliminating disinfection by-products (DBPs) precursors in water systems. It first presents the basic knowledge of BAC process and then compares the mechanisms of different water treatment technologies and the treatability of different DBP precursors. Furthermore, recent developments and breakthroughs in the removal of DBP precursors using BAC process are summarized, followed by recommendations for future research and knowledge gaps.

Contrasting Impacts of Photochemical and Microbial Processing on the Photoreactivity of Dissolved Organic Matter in an Adirondack Lake Watershed

Joseph Wasswa et al.

Summary: Photochemical degradation led to decreases in the apparent quantum yields of O-1(2), (DOM)-D-3*, and (OH)-O-center dot, while (photo-)biodegradation resulted in increases in the yield of O-1(2) and (DOM)-D-3*. Both photodegradation and (photo-)biodegradation also caused shifts in the energy distribution of (DOM)-D-3* in different directions. Multivariate statistical analyses revealed the potential relevance of photo-biodegradation in driving changes in the yield of O-1(2) and (DOM)-D-3*, prioritizing five bulk DOM optical and redox properties that best explained the variations in yield along the watershed terrestrial-aquatic continuum.

Paleolimnological comparison of algal changes in a clear-versus a brown-water lake over the last two centuries in the northeastern USA

Rachel A. Fowler et al.

Summary: This study reconstructed historical diatom and algal pigment records from two lakes in the northeastern U.S. and found divergent ecological responses to reduced acid deposition. The clear-water lake showed continuous changes in diatom community structure, while the brown-water lake was more static over time. The clear-water lake was more responsive to long-term climate warming, while nutrient subsidies from allochthonous DOC were likely the primary control in the brown-water lake. Despite signs of recovery in both lakes, changes were dampened in the clear-water lake, suggesting greater sensitivity to acid deposition and other external drivers.

Ongoing increases in dissolved organic carbon are sustained by decreases in ionic strength rather than decreased acidity in waters recovering from acidic deposition

Gregory B. Lawrence et al.

Summary: This study analyzed data from 142 headwater streams in the Adirondack region of New York to investigate the increase in dissolved organic carbon (DOC) since the early 2000s. The research found that DOC concentrations linearly increased during this period, with ionic strength showing consistent inverse relationships while pH did not significantly impact DOC levels. The study emphasizes the importance of distinguishing between ionic strength and pH effects on DOC solubility in surface waters recovering from acidification.

Northeastern mountain ponds as sentinels of change: Current and emerging research and monitoring in the context of shifting chemistry and climate interactions

Summary: Mountain ponds in the northeastern US have undergone acidification and subsequent recovery due to changes in atmospheric deposition and climate change. This study found widespread declines in sulfate concentrations, increasing ANC, declining conductivity, and increasing DOC in these ponds. Zooplankton communities are sensitive to water chemistry parameters associated with acidification recovery and climate change, highlighting the importance of understanding the combined impacts of atmospheric deposition and climate change on lake ecosystems in eastern mountain ponds.

Summary: Natural organic matter (NOM) can significantly impact drinking water quality, causing taste, odour, and colour problems. Removing NOM is challenging as it can lead to the formation of disinfection by-products which are harmful to human health. Various technologies have been used to remove NOM, with coagulants being the most common method.

Trends and current status of aluminum chemistry in Adirondack headwater streams 30 Years after the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990

Summary: Recent studies indicate that although concentrations of toxic forms of aluminum (Al-i) have decreased in the Adirondack region, a significant number of streams still experience harmful Al-i levels during spring snowmelt, particularly in the western region. Long-term monitoring and multiple resampling suggest that the recovery of Al chemistry is influenced by the increase in organically complexed Al and the availability of calcium.

Watershed-related processes play a key role in CDOM dynamics, with photochemical degradation and microbial decomposition being significant removal mechanisms.

Effects of climate and atmospheric deposition on a boreal lake chemistry: A synthesis of 36 years of monitoring data

Charles Marty et al.

Summary: Reduction in SO42- and NO3- atmospheric deposition in the past decades has improved surface water quality in several catchments, but an increasing influence of climate and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) has been observed. Decreased acidic deposition resulted in a general recovery of surface water, although the parallel increase in DOC concentration prevented from an increase in water alkalinity. The study also indicates an increasing influence of climate on water chemistry at the study site, probably mediated by increasing weathering rate and vegetation nutrient uptake.

Summary: Multiple studies have shown widespread browning of Northern Hemisphere lakes. An examination of Northeastern U.S. lakes found that the majority of lakes have experienced an increase in both DOC and color, with variable trends and no strong correlation between them, suggesting other factors beyond terrestrial carbon loading may be at play. Browning may be more prominent in regions where climate and atmospheric deposition are dominant drivers.

Summary: Monitoring of surface waters in the boreal region over the last decades has shown that waters are becoming browner due to human impacts. Human land use since around 700 AD and industrial acid deposition in the 20th century have led to a decrease in lake-water TOC levels, resulting in unprecedentedly low levels. The study highlights the importance of considering past, long-term disturbances in understanding contemporary environmental changes.

Seasonal variations in DOM quality in standing waters were investigated in a German reservoir using Fourier-transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FTICR MS) and 2D fluorescence. The study revealed that some components of DOM are easily photo-degradable and may act as coagulants in flocculation processes, while others may serve as potential precursors for disinfection byproducts.
