Uncovering the Burden of Dengue in Africa: Considerations on Magnitude, Misdiagnosis, and Ancestry

Emily Mary Gainor et al.

Summary: This review emphasizes important considerations for dengue disease in Africa, including epidemiology, underestimation of disease burden, malaria misdiagnosis and co-infections, and genetic protection from severe dengue disease. The findings suggest that dengue virus prevalence in African countries may be more widespread than reported, and mosquito vectors are increasing. Climate, population, and plastic pollution changes are expected to worsen dengue situation in Africa. Misdiagnosis of dengue as malaria is also a problem. It is important to pay attention and allocate more resources to dengue in Africa.

Analysis of monthly and annual rainfall variability using linear models in the state ofMato Grosso do Sul,Midwest of Brazil

Marcel Carvalho Abreu et al.

Summary: This study aims to estimate the monthly and annual mean rainfall in Mato Grosso do Sul state, Brazil, by fitting polynomial models based on latitude, longitude, and altitude coordinates. It was found that an increased number of predictor variables enhances the performance of regression methods, and fitting regressions in hydrologically similar groups through cluster analysis can improve regression performance. However, the limited number of rain gauge stations in Brazil makes applying this technique difficult due to the possibility of having more parameters in the regression models than rain gauge stations in the cluster.

Detecting lag linkage effect between economic policy uncertainty and crude oil price: A multi-scale perspective

Huizi He et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a new compound model to investigate the linkage effect between economic policy uncertainty (EPU) and West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil future price from 1985 to 2018. The results indicate significant differences in the linkage lag and association strength of the EPU index and oil price in different periods.

Lying in wait: the resurgence of dengue virus after the Zika epidemic in Brazil

Anderson Fernandes Brito et al.

Summary: The study found that dengue transmission was low in Brazil in 2017-2018 despite suitable conditions, with a decline in susceptibility and outbreaks in 2018-2019 caused by local DENV lineages that circulated cryptically for years before and after the Zika epidemic. This suggests that DENV lineages may circulate at low levels for extended periods before causing major outbreaks when conditions are conducive.

Impact of recent climate extremes on mosquito-borne disease transmission in Kenya

Cameron Nosrat et al.

Summary: Climate change and variability have nonlinear impacts on mosquito abundance and the risk of disease transmission. Data collection revealed a significant increase in mosquito eggs and adults one month following abnormally wet months. Early warnings and targeted interventions during periods of abnormal rainfall and temperature can potentially reduce the risk of viral transmission.

The correlation between three teleconnections and leptospirosis incidence in the Kandy District, Sri Lanka, 2004-2019

N. D. B. Ehelepola et al.

Summary: The study found that El Nino and the Indian Ocean Dipole modulate leptospirosis incidence in Kandy by influencing local rainfall and other weather parameters. Further research on the correlation between ENSO Modoki and leptospirosis incidence in Sri Lanka is recommended. Monitoring extreme teleconnection events and implementing preventive measures during lag periods can help reduce the peaks of leptospirosis.
