Coupling of membrane-based bubbleless micro-aeration for 2,4-dinitro- phenol degradation in a hydrolysis acidification reactor

Zhuowei Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the performance of membrane-based bubbleless micro-aeration coupled with hydrolysis acidification (MBL-MHA) in degrading 2,4-dinitrophenol (2,4-DNP). The results showed that MBL-MHA had better performance compared to traditional bubble micro-aeration HA (MHA) and anaerobic HA. This is mainly due to the presence of more reducing/oxidizing species and fermentative species in MBL-MHA.

Dyeing and finishing wastewater treatment in China: State of the art and perspective

Hong Chen et al.

Summary: China has the largest textile production and export in the world, resulting in a massive amount of wastewater and related pollutants being released. This review summarizes the characteristics of wastewater in different fiber production processes as well as the origins of specific pollutants, and discusses the complex evolution of discharge standards for dyeing and finishing wastewater (DFW) in China. The current status of pollutant reduction in the textile industry, cleaner production practices, wastewater treatment technologies, and possibilities for reclaimed water quality were also reviewed, emphasizing the importance of sustainable development through source reduction, treatment, and recycling.

Microbial Interactions Drive the Complete Catabolism of the Antibiotic Sulfamethoxazole in Activated Sludge Microbiomes

Mengyuan Qi et al.

Summary: The study identified key players involved in the degradation of organic pollutants by differentiating functional activated sludge microbiomes. Primary degraders Paenarthrobacter and Nocardioides were found to play essential roles in the complete catabolism of sulfamethoxazole (SMX). The research also revealed the internal labor division patterns and connections among active members in collaborative biodegradation, providing insights for synthetic activated sludge microbiomes with optimized environmental functions.

Dissolved oxygen disturbs nitrate transformation by modifying microbial community, co-occurrence networks, and functional genes during aerobic-anoxic transition

Xiaoyan Liu et al.

Summary: There is no consensus among researchers on the impact of dissolved oxygen (DO) on nitrate (NO3--N) transformation and microbial community during aerobic-anoxic transition. Changes in DO significantly influence NO3--N transformation rate and microbial diversity, with higher DO levels accelerating the process.

Identity and hydrocarbon degradation activity of enriched microorganisms from natural oil and asphalt seeps in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI)

Adris Shlimon et al.

Summary: This study utilized a cultivation-dependent approach to identify bacteria involved in hydrocarbon degradation in oil and asphalt seeps in Iraq. Enrichment cultures showed degradation of alkanes and aromatic hydrocarbons, with dominant bacterial taxa not commonly found in the original seeps. Despite marker genes not being detectable, the enriched taxa were related to known hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria, suggesting potential for anaerobic hydrocarbon degradation through unknown pathways.

Water flushing irremovable biofilms on support material in dynamic membrane bioreactor: Formation, composition, and microbial community

Ju Huang et al.

Summary: Dynamic membrane bioreactors rely on in-situ formed biofilms on support materials to reject fine particles in water. With low SRT and repeated water flushing, irremovable biofilms gradually form on support materials, leading to rapid rising in transmembrane pressure. The composition and microbial community between irremovable and removable biofilms differ significantly, affecting biofilm adhesion and removability.

Effects of sulfamethoxazole on nitrogen removal and molecular ecological network in integrated vertical-flow constructed wetland

Shaoyon Lu et al.

Summary: The study found that long-term exposure to SMX significantly increased nitrate removal rates in IVCWs, while ammonia nitrogen removal rates were not significantly affected. The presence of SMX led to a decrease in bacterial richness and alterations in bacterial community structures, especially those of nitrogen-transforming microorganisms. The molecular ecological network analysis revealed that SMX had positive effects on denitrifying bacteria interactions but reduced the complexity of the microbial network as a whole.
