Effect of different forms and components of EPS on sludge aggregation during granulation process of aerobic granular sludge

Ting Peng et al.

Summary: This study investigated the characteristics of three forms of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and their component proteins (PN) and polysaccharides (PS) during the granulation process of aerobic granular sludge (AGS) and their effects on the aggregation performance of AGS. The results showed that tightly bound EPS (TB-EPS) played a critical role in the formation of AGS, with PN being the major contributor to promoting the formation of AGS and enhancing its aggregation performance.

Microbial community-based protein production from wastewater for animal feed applications

Ramanujam Srinivasan Vethathirri et al.

Summary: SCP derived from microbial biomass is a promising protein source for animal feed additives. Utilizing nutrient-rich wastewaters for microbial community-based SCP production incurs lower costs compared to traditional methods, yet has received little attention. More research is needed to determine the optimal microbial community composition for SCP production and its relationship with influent food-processing wastewaters.

Effect of EPS and its forms of aerobic granular sludge on sludge aggregation performance during granulation process based on XDLVO theory

Yaying Wang et al.

Summary: This study revealed the different contributions of various forms of EPS (LB-EPS, TB-EPS, and EPS) to the formation process of aerobic granular sludge using surface characteristics analysis and surface thermodynamics theory. It was found that during granulation, the role of LB-EPS shifted from attraction to repulsion, while TB-EPS played a primary role in promoting the aggregation of sludge cells.

Changes in molecular structure of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) with temperature in relation to sludge macro-physical properties

Sainan Peng et al.

Summary: In this study, the response of EPS in sludge to temperature was systematically investigated, showing an improvement in sludge dewaterability during freezing treatment through enhancement of EPS hydrophobicity, and a deterioration in sludge dewaterability during hydrothermal treatment due to increased EPS hydrophilicity.
