Quantification of polyethylene terephthalate microplastics and nanoplastics in sands, indoor dust and sludge using a simplified in-matrix depolymerization method

Lei Tian et al.

Summary: An effective 3-step method for quantifying the mass of polyethylene terephthalate microplastics and nanoplastics (PET MNPs) in complex environmental matrices was developed, with successful application to different sample types. Results showed that PET MNPs levels in sand samples were below detection limits, while indoor dust samples exhibited a wide range of PET MNPs concentrations.

Does size matter? Quantification of plastics associated with size fractionated biosolids

Elvis D. Okoffo et al.

Summary: This study examined the presence and contribution of plastic particles associated with size-fractionated biosolids in biosolid samples collected from 20 wastewater treatment plants in Australia. The research found that the largest proportion of plastic mass was identified in the <25 μm biosolids fraction, with polyethylene being the dominant polymer. Additionally, there were variations in plastic concentrations between different WWTPs.

Separation and identification of microplastics in marine organisms by TGA-FTIR-GC/MS: A case study of mussels from coastal China

Yi Liu et al.

Summary: The study presents a method for detecting and quantifying microplastics in marine mussels, showcasing its effectiveness in identifying various types of plastics. Analysis conducted on mussels from six locations along the coast of China revealed polyethylene as the most commonly found plastic type, with mussels from Dalian having the highest microplastic content.

Analysis of environmental nanoplastics: Progress and challenges

Huiwen Cai et al.

Summary: Nanoplastics analysis lacks standardized and reliable methodologies, with challenges in separating and quantifying nanoplastics from real environmental samples. Raman spectroscopy and pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry are popular analytical methods, but current methods face issues such as time-consuming processes, particle size detection limits, and lack of chemical confirmation of polymer types in quantification.
