Bacterioplankton composition as an indicator of environmental status: proof of principle using indicator value analysis of estuarine communities

Cecilia Alonso et al.

Summary: Increasing awareness of environmental impacts caused by anthropogenic activities emphasizes the importance of determining environmental status indicators that can be assessed on a large scale. This study analyzed bacterioplankton communities in four estuaries worldwide and identified indicators based on physicochemical variables. These bacterial indicators showed high prediction capability and outperformed other biological assemblages commonly used for environmental monitoring. The study suggests that this approach could complement existing strategies for monitoring and conserving aquatic systems globally.

Spatial and seasonal dynamics of phosphorous and physicochemical variables in the Negro River Estuary (Argentina): a preliminary approach

Vanesa L. Perillo et al.

Summary: Seasonal physicochemical parameters at different stations along the Negro River Estuary in Argentina were studied, revealing higher total phosphorus concentration in warmer months compared to previous data, with orthophosphate values also high and fluctuating independently of total phosphorus. Turbidity, water temperature, pH, and conductivity did not seem to play a key role in phosphorus variations. An unexplained high total phosphorus spike in spring samples suggests the need for further research in the area.

Occurrence and seasonal variation of several endocrine disruptor compounds (pesticides, bisphenols, musks and UV-filters) in water and sediments from the estuaries of Tagus and Douro Rivers (NE Atlantic Ocean coast)

Sara C. Cunha et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the levels of endocrine disruptor chemicals (EDCs) in water and sediment samples from the estuaries of Tagus and Douro Rivers. The results showed that pesticide residues and bisphenols were more contaminated in the Tagus estuary, while polycyclic musks and UV-filters had lower levels of contamination in both estuaries.

Distinct bacterial communities and resistance genes enriched by triclocarban-contaminated polyethylene microplastics in antibiotics and heavy metals polluted sewage environment

Yifan Zhao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the formation of biofilms on contaminated microplastics in sewage polluted with antibiotics and/or heavy metals. The results showed that triclocarban (TCC), a common pollutant, did not hinder bacterial adhesion and biofilm formation on polyethylene microplastics (PE MPs). In fact, TCC-contaminated PE MPs were more likely to attract potential pathogenic and resistant bacteria compared to clean PE MPs. The presence of TCC, antibiotics, and copper in the sewage exerted a stronger selective pressure on bacterial communities and promoted the co-selection of resistance genes. Additionally, TCC-contaminated PE MPs increased the abundance of certain mobile genetic elements in sewage, which could facilitate the transmission of resistance genes.

Sources and composition of natural and anthropogenic hydrocarbons in sediments from an impacted estuary

Man Lu et al.

Summary: This study assessed the amounts, compositions, and sources of hydrocarbons in the sediments of Mobile Bay in Southeast USA. The results showed that the majority of hydrocarbons in the sediments were sourced from marine phytoplankton, bacteria, marsh, and terrigenous C3 plants. Anthropogenic hydrocarbons, such as coal and diesel combustion byproducts, were widely detected in the sediments. The study also found that the western estuary had higher levels of anthropogenic hydrocarbon inputs and ecological risk compared to the eastern estuary.

Jianhua Wang et al.

Summary: The study found that there were differences in the bacterial community structure on the surface of microbeads made of different materials immersed in seawater, with each type of microbead having a unique bacterial community. The attachment of microorganisms in seawater to steel and PVC microbeads showed the most significant differences.

Dissolved and particulate carbon export from a tropical mangrove-dominated riverine system

Raghab Ray et al.

Summary: This study estimated lateral exchange fluxes of dissolved and particulate organic carbon (DOC, POC) and dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) in a mangrove-dominated estuary in Panay Island, Philippines. The results showed that the mangrove system acted as a net exporter of carbon to the sea in both dry and wet seasons. DIC dominated the estuarine carbon flux with only minor contributions from DOC, and POC was a mixture of detrital and algal organic matter.

German A. Kopprio et al.

Summary: This study compared the bacterial community composition between carrageenophyte-attached and planktonic bacteria in two bays of Vietnam, revealing distinct differences in genera composition and nutrient concentrations. It highlights the potential for carrageenophyte-attached bacteria to serve as indicators of ecological status and anthropogenic impacts in marine systems.

Chemically unidentified dissolved organic carbon: A pivotal piece for microbial activity in a productive area of the Northern Patagonian shelf

John E. Garzon-Cardona et al.

Summary: The study found that phytoplankton is the main source of serine, alanine, and valine, as well as particulate carbohydrates. Additionally, the abundance of Gammaproteobacteria was negatively correlated with ammonium and positively correlated with DCAA, indicating a coupling between ammonium consumption and the production of refractory amino acids. Moreover, Cytophaga-Flavobacteria-Bacteroidetes were inferred to preferentially utilize alanine, leucine, and threonine as a nitrogen source.

Wastewater effluents cause microbial community shifts and change trophic status

J. E. Ruprecht et al.

Summary: This study used a novel combination of microbial ecotoxicology methods to investigate the effects of wastewater pollution on bacterial community structure and function. Wastewater effluents above moderate concentrations led to significant shifts in bacterial community structure and function, primarily driven by two globally relevant bacterial indicator taxa, Malikia spp. and hgcI_clade. These findings have immediate implications for both the management of environmental stressors and protection of aquatic ecosystems.

Relating sinking and suspended microbial communities in the California Current Ecosystem: digestion resistance and the contributions of phytoplankton taxa to export

Bellineth Valencia et al.

Summary: The study utilized various sequencing methods to quantify microbial abundances in water-column samples and sediment-trap-collected particles in the California Current Ecosystem. Results showed that most dominant eukaryotes and prokaryotes were underrepresented on sinking particles, while diatoms were consistently overrepresented. This highlights the importance of sequence-based quantitative approaches for assessing taxon contributions of phytoplankton to carbon export.

The renaissance of Odum's outwelling hypothesis in 'Blue Carbon' science

Isaac R. Santos et al.

Summary: The term 'Blue Carbon' was coined about a decade ago to highlight the important carbon sequestration capacity of coastal vegetated ecosystems. Recent investigations have revealed high outwelling of dissolved inorganic and organic carbon, as well as particulate organic carbon from blue carbon habitats. This highlights the need to pay attention to the mobile carbon fraction in the blue carbon framework.

Tight Adherence (Tad) Pilus Genes Indicate Putative Niche Differentiation in Phytoplankton Bloom Associated Rhodobacterales

Ashley Isaac et al.

Summary: The interactions between phytoplankton and bacterioplankton, especially the association of diatoms with Alphaproteobacteria of the order Rhodobacterales, play a crucial role in aquatic environments. While many members of Rhodobacterales compete during diatom blooms, only a subset form close associations with diatoms by colonizing their phycospheres. Members of Rhodobacterales are specialized in colonizing the microenvironment of diatom cells, known as the phycosphere, with different molecular mechanisms differentiating generalists and phycosphere colonizers.
