In-situ measurement on air-water flux of CH4, CO2 and their carbon stable isotope in lakes of northeast Tibetan Plateau

Lei Wang et al.

Summary: Inland waters serve as significant sources of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere, with high-altitude saline lakes on the Tibetan Plateau showing high CH4 concentrations as sources to the atmosphere but acting as sinks for CO2. Salinity, fDOM, temperature, and dissolved oxygen are key factors influencing CH4 and CO2 diffusive fluxes in these lakes, with a distinctly different isotopic source values of CO2 and CH4 found in Qinghai Lake and Hala Lake.

Drivers of inorganic carbon dynamics and air-water CO2 fluxes in two large tropical estuaries: Insights from coupled radon (222Rn) and pCO2 surveys

Anirban Akhand et al.

Summary: This study investigated the drivers of pCO(2)(water) dynamics in two large tropical estuaries in India and found that submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) significantly regulates pCO(2)(water) in these estuaries. The study also revealed that SGD contributes substantially to the inorganic carbon dynamics of these estuaries. These findings contribute to a better understanding of the role of SGD in carbon cycling in tropical estuaries and coastal oceans and can help in upscaling regional-scale coastal carbon budgets to a global scale.

Carbon dioxide and methane fluxes from mariculture ponds: The potential of sediment improvers to reduce carbon emissions

Dongxu Zhang et al.

Summary: The application of sediment improvers in coastal polyculture ponds can reduce carbon emissions, especially CH4 emissions. The improvements result in lower organic matter content, improved sediment pH and redox potential, and decreased CH4 production. CO2 produced through organic material oxidation in the sediment is absorbed through photosynthesis, resulting in no significant difference in CO2 fluxes between the two groups.

Annual CO2 and CH4 fluxes in coastal earthen ponds with Litopenaeus vannamei in southeastern China

Chuan Tong et al.

Summary: Small-scale aquaculture operations are increasingly common worldwide, with this study specifically examining the greenhouse gas dynamics in shrimp ponds in southeastern China. The ponds were found to act as a CO2 sink and a CH4 source, with ebullition being the main emission pathway for CH4 during the farming period. This comprehensive year-long study enhances our understanding of carbon cycling in coastal aquaculture ponds and provides a scientific basis for updating greenhouse gas inventories.

Dissolved methane in the water column of the Saguenay Fjord

Yijie Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the methane emission rates and drivers in the Saguenay Fjord in eastern Canada. It found that river runoff accounts for 81% of the total methane input to the fjord, with microbial oxidation of methane comparable to emission to the atmosphere. Deep-water renewal and river runoff play crucial roles in controlling methane dynamics and emissions in fjords.

Mahmood Sadat-Noori et al.

Summary: Research on the largest urban freshwater lake in the metropolitan area of Sydney revealed that the lake system is a source of CO2 and CH4 to the atmosphere. Groundwater discharge plays a significant role in greenhouse gas emissions from the lake, contributing 25% of CO2 and 13% of CH4 emissions.

The 'Perfect' Conversion: Dramatic Increase in CO2 Efflux from Shellfish Ponds and Mangrove Conversion in China

Xiaoguang Ouyang et al.

Summary: The expansion of aquaculture, especially shellfish ponds, in China has led to mangrove deforestation and blue carbon loss. CO2 efflux from shellfish ponds is significantly higher than that from adjacent mangrove forests, mainly due to high nutrient levels and physical disturbance. Therefore, curbing aquaculture pond expansion and increasing mangrove restoration are necessary actions to address this issue.

Submarine groundwater discharge as a significant export of dissolved inorganic carbon from a mangrove tidal creek to Qinglan Bay (Hainan Island, China)

Zijun Wu et al.

Summary: The study found that mangrove detritus is the major source of POC and DOC in mangrove tidal creek water, while organic matter degradation and terrestrial groundwater discharge are the main processes providing DIC for the pore water. Quantitative evaluation through SGD and associated dissolved carbon showed that DIC is the dominant form of dissolved carbon export from mangroves to the adjacent bay.

Submarine groundwater discharge impacts on coastal nutrient biogeochemistry

Isaac R. Santos et al.

Summary: Submarine groundwater discharge (SGD) plays a significant role in connecting terrestrial and marine systems by releasing nutrients into coastal waters. SGD-derived nitrogen inputs can alleviate nitrogen limitation in coastal ecosystems. Saline SGD is a widespread source of recycled nutrients to global coastal waters, while fresh SGD acts as a localized point source of new nutrients.
