Linking ecosystem services to a coastal bay ecosystem health assessment: A comparative case study between Jiaozhou Bay and Daya Bay, China

Weiwei Yu et al.

Summary: Coastal bays, as part of Earth's critical zone, have significant ecological and socioeconomic roles. This study developed an integrated ecosystem health assessment framework to determine critical indicators and establish reference benchmarks based on specific ecosystem services. The framework was applied to two typical coastal bays, revealing that Daya Bay was healthier than Jiaozhou Bay. The findings provide important information for prospective bay management.

Spatial-explicit carbon emission-sequestration balance estimation and evaluation of emission susceptible zones in an Eastern Himalayan city using Pressure-Sensitivity-Resilience framework: An approach towards achieving low carbon cities

Subrata Ghosh et al.

Summary: Urbanization and land-use change contribute significantly to greenhouse gas emissions, making them a major concern for climate change and environmental degradation. This study focuses on assessing the carbon emissions, sequestration capacities, and resilience of a Himalayan city. The results highlight the importance of population size, household size, and concentration of built-up land in carbon emissions. The integrated assessment method and spatial-explicit carbon emission susceptible zones developed in this study provide valuable insights for carbon emission studies and low carbon cities framework.

Poplar trees do not always act as a water pump: Evidence from modeling deep drainage in a low-coverage-mode shelterbelt in China

Wei Li et al.

Summary: The study found that water budget varies under different afforestation strategies, with the stand planted using a low-coverage-mode shelterbelt strategy having higher deep drainage levels and greater spatial heterogeneity. Soil moisture, precipitation, and soil saturated hydraulic conductivity were identified as key factors influencing deep drainage. Other climate factors and vegetation structure parameters affected evapotranspiration, which showed a significantly negative relationship with deep drainage.

Regulated Ecosystem Services Trade-Offs: Synergy Research and Driver Identification in the Vegetation Restoration Area of the Middle Stream of the Yellow River

Ge Wang et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the impact and driving mechanism of ecological restoration on the relationship between ecosystem services (ESs) in the middle reaches of the Yellow River. The results show that different vegetation restoration models have significant differences in the restoration rate of ESs and affect the relationship between different ESs.

Quantitative Assessment for the Spatiotemporal Changes of Ecosystem Services, Tradeoff-Synergy Relationships and Drivers in the Semi-Arid Regions of China

Yongge Li et al.

Summary: Ecosystem services in arid inland regions are significantly affected by climate change and land use/land cover change associated with agricultural activity. This study quantifies the spatiotemporal patterns of ecosystem services in the Hexi Region and explores their relationships and drivers. The results show significant improvements in ecosystem services in the past 40 years, but also reveal trade-offs and spatial heterogeneity. Human activities and climate change have important implications for ecosystem services in this region.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the variations of ecosystem services (ESs) and ecosystem service index (ESI) in semi-arid regions, using the CA-Markov and InVEST models. The results showed different spatial patterns of ESI under different development scenarios, and revealed the spatial heterogeneity of responses on ESI from natural and human drivers.

Revealing ecosystem services relationships and their driving factors for five basins of Beijing

Gao Jiangbo et al.

Summary: This study simulated soil conservation, water yield and carbon sequestration in Beijing, China, and explored the spatial trade-offs and synergies using geographically weighted regression. The study also quantitatively identified the driving mechanism of environmental factors for the ES trade-offs and synergies through geographical detector analysis. The results showed spatial trade-offs between soil conservation and water yield, as well as between water yield and carbon sequestration, with a synergy between soil conservation and carbon sequestration.

A geographic identification of sustainable development obstacles and countermeasures in drylands: A case study in Inner Mongolia, China

Tong Li et al.

Summary: Drylands cover 41% of the Earth's land surface and are home to over 2 billion people who rely on the ecosystem services for their livelihoods. Research on sustainable livelihoods in drylands is limited, but a study in Inner Mongolia evaluates the sustainable livelihood through a geographic gradient and reveals variations in different aridity zones. The lack of physical and social capital is identified as a major obstacle for sustainable livelihoods in drylands.

Jiangyue Li et al.

Summary: This study conducted a comprehensive analysis of the impacts of future climate change and human activities on ecosystem services in Central Asia, finding that land-use changes will lead to decreasing trends in multiple ESs, emphasizing the need for different management strategies to maintain the balance among key water, soil, carbon, and biodiversity services.

Mapping the spatiotemporal heterogeneity of ecosystem service relationships and bundles in Ningxia, China

Jie Xu et al.

Summary: This study selected and assessed 8 representative ES types in Ningxia, revealing the tradeoff or synergistic relationships between paired ESs and their linkages with socioecological driving factors. Spatiotemporal dynamic changes in ESBs were mapped in Ningxia from 2000 to 2015, showing significant differences in natural and socioeconomic conditions from south to north in the region. The results highlighted the coupled relationships among these ESs and certain achievements in ecological construction in Ningxia, with most ES pairs mainly positively correlated at all scales.
