Industrial Production of Organophosphate Flame Retardants (OPFRs): Big Knowledge Gaps Need to Be Filled?

Jianan Huang et al.

Summary: With the phase-out of traditional halogenated flame retardants, research interests have shifted to organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs). This study conducted an extensive survey to identify the OPFRs currently being produced in factories and investigate their annual production volume (APV). Results indicate that there are at least 56 OPFR monomers and 62 OPFR mixtures being produced in 367 factories worldwide, with 201 of them located in Mainland China. The estimated APV of OPFRs is 598,422 metric tons, which may be underestimated due to limited information availability. The study also highlights the limited research on certain types of OPFRs and provides recommendations for future research in this area.

Organophosphate Esters and Their Metabolites in Breast Milk from the United States: Breastfeeding Is an Important Exposure Pathway for Infants

Guomao Zheng et al.

Summary: Organophosphate esters (OPEs) are synthetic chemicals found in high concentrations in the indoor environment, and their metabolites were detected in breast milk from U.S. mothers. The study found that diester OPE concentrations were twice as high as triester OPE concentrations, and breastfeeding is a significant source of OPE exposure for infants. The most abundant OPE in breast milk was tris(1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate, while the metabolite di-n-butyl phosphate (DNBP) was the most abundant OPE metabolite detected in the samples.

Human internal exposure to organophosphate esters: A short review of urinary monitoring on the basis of biological metabolism research

Xin Wang et al.

Summary: Organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs), especially organophosphate esters (OPEs), have raised concerns on environmental and health risks. Biomonitoring research provides precise information on human exposure, while knowledge on biotransformation and metabolism of OPEs is crucial for understanding internal exposure. Further developments in methodologies for urine sampling and estimation on internal exposure to OPEs are needed.

Organophosphorus flame retardants in breast milk from Beijing, China: Occurrence, nursing infant's exposure and risk assessment

Xuelei Chen et al.

Summary: The study investigated the occurrence of thirteen OPFRs in breast milk samples collected from Beijing mothers in 2018, revealing China as one of the most affected regions by OPFRs. Personal characteristics of mothers were found to impact the levels of certain OPFRs in breast milk, with most nursing infants' daily OPFR intake not raising significant health concerns. However, two OPFRs, TPhP and EHDPP, were noted to have higher estimated daily intakes than corresponding reference doses, potentially posing health risks.
