Untargeted analysis of contaminants in river water samples: Comparison between two different sorbents for solid-phase extraction followed by liquid chromatography-high-resolution mass spectrometry determination

Carmela Maria Montone et al.

Summary: An untargeted approach using UHPLC-HRMS/MS was employed to analyze contaminants in surface water, with optimized SPE conditions for 30 target compounds. River water samples near Rome were analyzed, resulting in identification of 241 compounds, mainly pharmaceuticals, by matching tandem mass spectra with mass spectral library.

Legacy and emerging organic contaminants in the polar regions

Zhiyong Xie et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the occurrence and transport processes of emerging organic contaminants (EOCs) and legacy persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in polar regions. It highlights the differences between the Arctic and Antarctica, and the potential effects of remobilization on pollutant concentrations.

Climate change influence on the levels and trends of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and chemicals of emerging Arctic concern (CEACs) in the Arctic physical environment - a review

Hayley Hung et al.

Summary: Climate change has significant effects on the physical environment in the Arctic, which in turn affects the distribution of contaminants and impacts the Arctic ecosystems. However, there are still gaps in our knowledge about the indirect effects of climate change on contaminants, and more research is needed.

Airborne bacteria and particulate chemistry capture Phytoplankton bloom dynamics in an Arctic fjord

Matteo Feltracco et al.

Summary: Investigations of airborne chemical markers and microbial communities in the atmosphere are critical for identifying sources and transformation processes of aerosols. Different trends were observed for amino acids and organic acids during marine phytoplankton blooms, indicating their potential as useful markers for monitoring bloom phases.

First screening of biocides, persistent organic pollutants, pharmaceutical and personal care products in Antarctic phytoplankton from Deception Island by FT-ICR-MS

Bernardo Duarte et al.

Summary: In recent years, the Antarctic territory has experienced an increase in tourists and scientists, leading to a rise in anthropogenic footprint and emerging contaminants in Antarctic ecosystems. Through high-resolution mass spectrometry, 70 different contaminant compounds were found in phytoplankton, highlighting the presence of various toxic compounds. The detection of potential harmful substances at the base of the marine food web can have severe impacts on the ecosystem's trophic structure, indicating a need to revisit environmental protection guidelines.

Long-Range Transport, Trophic Transfer, and Ecological Risks of Organophosphate Esters in Remote Areas

Jie Fu et al.

Summary: Organophosphate esters (OPEs) have drawn attention in the field of environmental science due to their environmental risks, especially in remote areas. These compounds have relatively high contamination levels and bioaccumulation potential in remote areas, requiring more attention to their potential ecological risks.

Variability in black carbon mass concentration in surface snow at Svalbard

Michele Berto et al.

Summary: This study provides detailed information on the evolution and variability of BC content in the upper surface snow layer during spring in Svalbard. Precipitation events were found to be the main drivers of BC variability during the seasonal experiment, while a negative association was found in high-resolution sampling. Snow metamorphism and local sources activation during snowmelt periods also played a non-negligible role. The statistical analysis suggests that the BC content in the snow is not directly associated with atmospheric BC load.
