Electricity-enhanced anaerobic, non-photosynthetic mixotrophy by Clostridium carboxidivorans with increased carbon efficiency and alcohol production

Chi Cheng et al.

Summary: Anaerobic, non-photosynthetic mixotrophy (ANP mixotrophy) is a process where glucose consumption and CO2 fixation occur concurrently. Previous studies used exogenous reducing power like H2 and syngas, but their low solubility hindered efficient utilization by bacteria. This study used a bioelectrochemical system to provide electrons for CO2 fixation in acetogenic bacteria, resulting in higher alcohol production and carbon efficiency.

Deciphering the effects of engineered biochar on methane production and the mechanisms during anaerobic digestion: Surface functional groups and electron exchange capacity

Qian Jiang et al.

Summary: In this study, the effects of two modified biochars on anaerobic digestion were investigated. The results showed that H2O2-oxidized biochar increased methane yield and production rate, while HNO3-oxidized biochar inhibited methanogenesis. H2O2-oxidized biochar promoted acetoclastic methanogenesis and hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis through improved electron transfer activity.

Efficient coproduction of butanol, ethanol, and biohydrogen from municipal solid waste through a cocultivated biorefinery

Farinaz Ebrahimian et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the cocultivation of Clostridium acetobutylicum and Mucor indicus, which showed the potential to generate high yields of acetone-butanol-ethanol (ABE) and hydrogen from the organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW). The symbiosis between the fungus and bacteria led to high ethanol, butanol, and hydrogen yields without the need for starch hydrolysis. The cocultivation showed higher energy generation and economic potential compared to mono cultivation.

The effects and mechanisms of zero-valent iron on anaerobic digestion of solid waste: A mini-review

Wenfeng Ye et al.

Summary: The addition of zero-valent iron (ZVI) in anaerobic digestion systems has been shown to improve microbial activity and enhance the long-term stability of digesters, leading to higher methane production. However, challenges remain in designing efficient and cost-effective AD systems due to the variability in operation and digestion substrates. Further studies are needed to better utilize ZVI for enhanced AD performance under different conditions.

Insights into the simultaneous nitrification, denitrification and phosphorus removal process for in situ sludge reduction and potential phosphorus recovery

Qiulai He et al.

Summary: The study showed that an SNDPR system operated in an alternating anaerobic/aerobic/anoxic mode can effectively remove COD, TP, NH4+-N, and TIN, enhance the bioactivity and biomass density of inoculated sludge, and maintain stable amounts of EPS with a stable PN/PS ratio. Additionally, the system exhibited a low observed sludge yield and a maximum anaerobic phosphorus release, providing opportunities for further phosphorus recovery. The SNDPR system not only deserves attention for in situ sludge reduction and potential phosphorus recovery, but also for its reliable and stable wastewater treatment performance.
