Association between gaseous air pollutants and biomarkers of systemic inflammation: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Zhouyang Xu et al.

Summary: Short-term exposure to gaseous air pollutants is significantly associated with increased levels of inflammatory biomarkers, while the associations with long-term exposure are weaker and require further verification. Studies with better design and higher quality show more apparent associations.

The impact of clinical nutrition on inflammatory skin diseases

Anne Guertler et al.

Summary: The influence of nutrition on inflammatory facial dermatoses has been controversially discussed, but recent research suggests a link between the gut and the skin, with nutrition playing a role. While some studies show that dietary adjustments can improve the severity of certain skin diseases, there is limited data to support specific dietary recommendations for conditions like seborrheic and perioral dermatitis. In the future, clinical nutrition and dermatology are expected to be more closely intertwined.

The role of environmental exposures and gene-environment interactions in the etiology of systemic lupus erythematous

Jennifer M. P. Woo et al.

Summary: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a complex chronic autoimmune disease caused by both genetic and environmental factors. Genetic risk factors account for only one-third of the observed heritability, with the remaining risk attributed to environmental exposures and gene-environment interactions. Occupational exposure to crystalline silica, current smoking, and exogenous estrogens are positively associated with SLE risk. Other factors like lifestyle behaviors, UV radiation, air pollution, solvents, pesticides, vaccines and medications, and infections may also contribute to SLE risk. Alcohol use may be associated with decreased risk. Gene-environment interactions involving IL-10, ESR1, IL-33, ITGAM, and NAT2, along with smoking, UV exposure, and alcohol, have been found to influence SLE risk. Understanding these risk factors and their interactions can help in understanding SLE pathogenesis and developing preventive interventions.

Health Endpoint of Exposure to Criteria Air Pollutants in Ambient Air of on a Populated in Ahvaz City, Iran

Seyed Hamid Borsi et al.

Summary: The presence of criteria air pollutants in the ambient air poses a serious threat to public health. This study evaluated the health outcomes of cardiovascular mortalities, hospital admissions with cardiovascular disease, and hospital admissions for respiratory disease due to exposure to these pollutants. The results showed that increased levels of particle matter, ozone, nitrogen dioxide, and sulfide dioxide were associated with higher morbidity and mortality rates. Thus, these findings are of great importance in improving public health.

Minxue Shen et al.

Summary: A retrospective cohort study in China found significant associations between long-term exposure to black carbon and symptoms of depression in incoming college students, especially in women and those with higher educational levels. Sensitivity analysis showed consistent effects of black carbon on depression from acute to long-term exposure.

Short-term exposure to nitrogen dioxide and mortality: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Mingrui Wang et al.

Summary: The study suggests a positive association between short-term exposure to nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and all-cause as well as cause-specific mortality, with each 10 ppb increase in NO2 associated with a rise in the risk of death. Heterogeneity in the results could be reduced through regional and study-design stratification.

Bite of the wolf: innate immune responses propagate autoimmunity in lupus

Sarthak Gupta et al.

Summary: The etiopathogenesis of systemic lupus erythematosus involves a complex interplay between genetic susceptibility factors and the environment, leading to abnormal cell death and immune dysregulation. Recent research has highlighted the important roles of components of the innate immune system, such as neutrophils and interferons, in the pathogenesis of lupus and their potential for novel therapeutic strategies.

Heming Bai et al.

Summary: The study found that air pollutants PM2.5 and NO2 may be risk factors for lupus nephritis (LN), while short-term exposure to CO and O-3 does not generally have an association with LN. Furthermore, negative associations of LN with SO2 were observed for the entire region and east China.

The relationship of polluted air and drinking water sources with the prevalence of systemic lupus erythematosus: a provincial population-based study

Jiaqi Chen et al.

Summary: The study found that environmental exposures interact with genetic factors to influence susceptibility of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) development. Levels of NOx in air and drinking water may be important predispositions for SLE, especially for patients with renal involvement. This suggests a potential link between pollution and the prevalence of SLE.

Summary: The study presents a 6-year-long high-resolution Chinese air quality reanalysis dataset that contains surface fields of six conventional air pollutants in China from 2013 to 2018. The dataset, obtained through assimilation of surface observations, exhibits excellent performance in reproducing the magnitude and variability of surface air pollutants.
