Nucleation and dissociation of carbon dioxide hydrate in the inter- and intra-particle pores of dioctahedral smectite: Mechanistic insights from molecular dynamics simulations

Yun Li et al.

Summary: The nucleation and dissociation of CO2 hydrate in the inter- and intra-particle pores of dioctahedral smectite particles are affected by the layer charge distribution and type of exchangeable cations in the smectite, altering the structural ordering of water molecules. CO2 diffusion into intra-particle pores enhances the formation of clathrate-like structures but does not increase the structural ordering of water molecules. Increasing temperature or adding electrolytes accelerates CO2 hydrate dissociation in smectite particles.

Summary: Molecular dynamics simulations explore the kinetic effect of seawater ions and their coupling with the clay surface effect on CH4 hydrate formation. The results reveal that hydrate formation in saline water is affected by the complex interaction between seawater ions and kaolinite surfaces. Interestingly, more hydrate solids are formed in the hydrophobic nanopore compared to the hydrophilic nanopore.

Molecular insights into the effects of surface property and pore size of non-swelling clay on methane hydrate formation

Fengyi Mi et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of basal surface and pore-size on CH4 hydrate formation using systematic molecular dynamics simulations. The results show that the basal surfaces of kaolinite clay affect hydrate formation by changing the aqueous CH4 concentration through surface adsorption. The highly hydrophilic gibbsite surface promotes hydrate formation, while the hydrophobic siloxane surface prolongs the induction time and slows down hydrate growth kinetics. Larger pore size is more favorable for hydrate formation, while extreme narrow nanopores inhibit hydrate formation.

Facilitating gas hydrate dissociation kinetics and gas migration in clay interlayer by surface cations shielding effects

Bin Fang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the dissociation of methane hydrate in clay sediments using molecular dynamics simulations. It was found that methane nanobubbles form at the liquid water/hydrate interface for the cations in the system, while forming on the mineral surface for the cations outside the system. Additionally, the release of methane diffuses faster in the system with cations compared to the system without cations and sandy pores.

Methane Hydrate Formation in the Salty Water Confined in Clay Nanopores: A Molecular Simulation Study

Zhongjin He et al.

Summary: A solid understanding of how clay surfaces and salt ions affect the formation of CH4 hydrates is crucial for the development of natural gas hydrate resources and technologies like seawater desalination. The simulation results show that different surfaces exhibit varying affinities for water, salt ions, and CH4, leading to significant impacts on hydrate formation. Gibbsite surfaces promote hydrate formation, while siloxane surfaces inhibit it due to surface adsorption of CH4. Salt ions further enhance inhibition.

Numerical analysis on gas production from heterogeneous hydrate system in Shenhu area by depressurizing: Effects of hydrate-free interlayers

Xinxin Cao et al.

Summary: This study explores the influence of hydrate-free interlayers (HFIs) on gas production in NGH reservoirs in the Shenhu area. The results show that NGHs adjacent to HFIs dissociate preferentially over time, thereby increasing gas production. High-permeability HFIs act as channels that enhance pressure diffusion, fluid flow, heat transfer, and long-term gas production efficiency. In contrast, low-permeability HFIs negatively affect gas production.

Effects of surface property of mixed clays on methane hydrate formation in nanopores: A molecular dynamics study

Fengyi Mi et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of mixed clay surfaces on CH4 hydrate formation using molecular dynamics simulations. The results show that the surfaces of mixed clays adsorb CH4, H2O, and ions, thereby changing their concentrations in the nanopores and affecting hydrate formation. Different affinities for adsorption are observed for surfaces of montmorillonite, illite, and different components of kaolinite, leading to variations in CH4 and ion concentrations and influencing hydrate growth.

Molecular insights into CO2 hydrate formation in the presence of hydrophilic and hydrophobic solid surfaces

Zhongjin He et al.

Summary: Microsecond molecular simulations were conducted to investigate the impact of surface properties on CO2 hydrate formation in slit-nanopores of graphite and hydroxylated-silica surfaces. The results showed that different surface properties affect hydrate formation primarily by altering the aqueous CO2 concentration. Hydrophobic graphite surfaces adsorbed CO2 molecules strongly, reducing the aqueous CO2 concentration, while hydrophilic silica surfaces led to high aqueous CO2 concentration due to the adsorption of CO2 nanobubbles.

Reduced phase stability and faster formation/dissociation kinetics in confined methane hydrate

Dongliang Jin et al.

Summary: By using advanced molecular modeling techniques and mesoscale thermodynamic approach, the mechanisms involved in the formation/dissociation of methane hydrate confined at the nanometer scale have been unraveled. The phase stability of confined methane hydrate is shown to be restricted to a narrower temperature and pressure domain compared to its bulk counterpart. The findings provide insights into the faster kinetics observed in experiments on confined gas hydrates and offer a means to rationalize and predict methane hydrate formation in any porous media.
