Contributions of polysaccharides to arsenate resistance in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii

Zhongquan Jiang et al.

Summary: The study found that when exposed to low concentrations of As(V), Chlamydomonas reinhardtii accumulated starch and produced more extracellular polysaccharides, while under high concentrations of As(V), the cells redirected carbon flux and transformed lipids into polysaccharides, indicating the critical involvement of polysaccharides in As(V) resistance in C. reinhardtii.

Defense pathways of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii under silver nanoparticle stress: Extracellular biosorption, internalization and antioxidant genes

Limei Xu et al.

Summary: The study investigated the defense mechanisms of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii cells to silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) exposure. It was found that the production of exopolysaccharide and protein increased under Ag-NPs stress, enhancing the extracellular biosorption capacity. The internalized Ag was higher than the surface biosorption. The exposure to Ag-NPs caused oxidative stress in cells, but the algae cells activated defense pathways to cope with it. Upregulation of antioxidant genes and the involvement of ascorbate-GSH defense pathway were observed. These findings provide valuable insights into the ecotoxicity and adaptation capabilities of algal cells to Ag-NPs.

Self-defense mechanisms of microorganisms from the antimicrobial effect of silver nanoparticles: Highlight the role of extracellular polymeric substances

Yi Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) released by Escherichia coli (E. coli) on the dissolution and sulfidation of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and the associated growth inhibition to E. coli. The results show that EPS inhibited AgNPs dissolution, but facilitated the reductive transformation of Ag+ to Ag(0) under simulated sunlight. EPS also enhanced the colloidal stability of AgNPs and promoted sulfidation, thereby reducing the available dissolved Ag+ ions and relieving the antibacterial activity of AgNPs to E. coli.

Role of iron in gene expression and in the modulation of copper uptake in a freshwater alga: Insights on Cu and Fe assimilation pathways

Emeric Kochoni et al.

Summary: Metal uptake and toxicity are influenced by its aqueous speciation and competitive ions, as well as internal biological feedback mechanisms. This study found that the uptake rate of Cu2+ significantly increased in algal cells acclimated to a low Fe3+ environment, up to 4.7 times higher compared to non-acclimated cells. The overexpression of certain genes suggests the activation of a high affinity Fe3+ assimilation system, which may explain the increase in Cu2+ uptake rate in acclimatized algae.

Effect of trace elements in the toxicity of copper to Chlamydomonas reinhardtii

Hui Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the response mechanisms of algae cells under copper ion interference. It was found that the cell wall hindered the accumulation of copper and alleviated its toxicity to algae. Additionally, the addition of copper increased the accumulation of iron by algae cells and in an environment with excess copper, the total accumulation of zinc and manganese by cells also increased. The difference in total accumulation of various trace elements between wild-type and wall-less-type algae may be due to the structure and function differences between the cell wall and cell membrane.
