Interactive effects of ZnO nanoparticles and temperature on molecular and cellular stress responses of the blue mussel Mytilus edulis

Fangli Wu et al.

Summary: Temperature has significant effects on the sublethal toxicity of nano-ZnO in marine bivalves. Exposure to high concentrations of nano-ZnO can cause oxidative injury and apoptotic response in mussels, and these effects are strongly influenced by temperature and season. The effects of nano-ZnO differ from those of dissolved Zn in mussels. This study highlights the importance of using multiple biomarkers to assess the toxicity of nano-ZnO to marine organisms under variable environmental conditions.

Lethality of Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles Surpasses Conventional Zinc Oxide via Oxidative Stress, Mitochondrial Damage and Calcium Overload: A Comparative Hepatotoxicity Study

Xingyao Pei et al.

Summary: This study compared the hepatotoxicity mechanisms of ZnO NPs and conventional ZnO in vitro and in vivo. The results showed that ZnO NPs caused more severe cell damage and had a greater impact on gene expression compared to ZnO. In addition, ZnO NPs induced more significant liver damage in rats. These findings contribute to the understanding of the hepatotoxicity mechanisms of Zn compounds in different forms and improve the risk assessment of novel nano ZnO products in various applications.

Season-dependent effects of ZnO nanoparticles and elevated temperature on bioenergetics of the blue mussel Mytilus edulis

Fangli Wu et al.

Summary: Exposure to zinc oxide nanoparticles (nZnO) had significant effects on carbohydrate levels and electron transport system activity in blue mussels. Moderate winter warming may partially compensate for the bioenergetics stress caused by nZnO toxicity, while summer warming led to decreases in lipid and carbohydrate levels.

Baltic Sea sediments record anthropogenic loads of Cd, Pb, and Zn

Sina Shahabi-Ghahfarokhi et al.

Summary: The study reveals that Baltic Sea sediments record significant loads of Cd, Zn, and Pb, influenced by redox conditions. Concentrations of these metals increased from the early 19th century to the 1970s, then decreased, but are still above pre-industrial levels. Pre-industrial Cd, Zn, and Pb concentrations were higher than those suggested by the Swedish EPA. The reduction in pollution of these metals since the 1980s highlights the importance of environmental governance.

Immune responses to ZnO nanoparticles are modulated by season and environmental temperature in the blue mussels Mytilus edulis

Fangli Wu et al.

Summary: Increased production and release of ZnO nanoparticles can have toxic effects on marine ecosystems and aquatic organisms, with immune cells of blue mussels showing different responses to nZnO exposure in winter and summer. The immune response in mussels was dysregulated by temperature variation in summer, but not in winter. This suggests seasonal acclimatization and warming may have detrimental effects on the innate immunity of mussel populations in summer.

Salinity-dependent effects of ZnO nanoparticles on bioenergetics and intermediate metabolite homeostasis in a euryhaline marine bivalve, Mytilus edulis

Mirza Nusrat Noor et al.

Summary: The study investigated the interactive effects of nZnO and dissolved Zn on bioenergetics and intermediate metabolite homeostasis in marine bivalves under different salinity regimes. Findings revealed that dissolved Zn had more damaging metabolic effects than nZnO, and salinity variations strongly influenced metabolic homeostasis and responses to nanoparticle exposure in mussels. Additionally, fluctuating salinity appeared less stressful than constant hypoosmotic stress, demonstrating the importance of considering habitat salinity in assessing the toxic effects of nanopollutants on coastal organisms.
