Testing graphene versus classical soil improvers in a sandy calcisol

Luigi Alessandrino et al.

Summary: In this study, graphene was tested for the first time as a soil improver on a calcareous sandy soil. Results showed that graphene performed well in reducing nutrients and metals leaching compared to traditional soil improvers, without altering soil's physical-chemical parameters or releasing nutrients and heavy metals into the solution.

The Future of Flash Graphene for the Sustainable Management of Solid Waste

Najmul Haque Barbhuiya et al.

Summary: The method of flash graphene (FG) production converts bulk quantities of carbonaceous materials into graphene, providing a way to convert various solid wastes containing carbon into valuable products, thus reducing waste volume and enabling resource valorization.

Nutrients and carbon fate in two lowland contrasting soils amended with compost

Luigi Alessandrino et al.

Summary: The study found that the effects of compost application combined with minimum tillage and traditional fertilization in two agricultural soils in the Po River plain are transient, with nutrient leaching diminishing over time if new incorporations do not occur. Nutrient leaching in shallow groundwater was minimal and followed a decreasing order of nitrate > ammonium > nitrite > phosphate. The distribution of nutrients also depended on groundwater fluxes and boundary conditions, and soil organic carbon increase was temporary and ceased after three years.

Leaching of graphene oxide nanosheets in simulated soil and their influences on microbial communities

Qixing Zhou et al.

Summary: The study found that soil porosity and adsorption processes affect the leaching and migration of nanosheets in soil, leading to changes in their physicochemical properties. Leaching of nanosheets interferes with soil microbial homeostasis and alters the utilization of carbon sources by soil microbes.

Application of Zeolites in Agriculture and Other Potential Uses: A Review

Eleonora Cataldo et al.

Summary: Excessive use of nitrogen fertilizer and inappropriate fertilization designs have negative impacts on agricultural ecosystems, exacerbated by climate change-induced production declines and water shortages. Natural zeolites show promise as soil conditioners to improve soil properties, reduce nutrient loss, and enhance water-use efficiency in drylands.

Fate of 14C-labeled few-layer graphene in natural soils: competitive roles of ferric oxides

Shipeng Dong et al.

Summary: This study investigates the immobilization, transportation, and transformation of carbon-14-labeled few-layer graphene in two different types of soils. Red soil showed a significantly higher adsorption capacity for FLG compared to black soil, with ferric oxides identified as the predominant component governing the retention of FLG in soils through electrostatic attraction. Furthermore, in the presence of naturally generated H2O2, ferric oxides acted as a catalyst to trigger a heterogeneous Fenton reaction, degrading FLG into CO2 gas phase for release from the soil.
