Simultaneous partial Nitrification, ANAMMOX and denitrification (SNAD)-A review of critical operating parameters and reactor configurations

Virender Singh et al.

Summary: Nitrogen removal is a crucial aspect of wastewater treatment. Traditional biological nitrogen removal processes are effective but costly. The integration of ANAMMOX bacteria with shortcut nitrogen removal processes has provided a sustainable solution, although practical limitations remain. The SNAD process, which involves a synergistic relationship among AOB, ANAMMOX, and denitrifiers, offers a promising alternative with high nitrogen removal efficiency. This review examines the recent developments in the SNAD process, including critical process parameters and different reactor configurations, and provides guidance for future engineering applications.

Inorganic carbon (IC) as a key factor affecting the performance of anammox-hydroxyapatite (HAP) process at extremely low temperature (7?°C)

Lan Lin et al.

Summary: In this study, the anammox-hydroxyapatite (HAP) process was applied to achieve efficient nitrogen removal at a low temperature. The effect of inorganic carbon (IC) on the process was investigated, and it was found that IC had different effects on nitrogen and phosphorus removal. The phosphorus removal efficiency varied with the Ca/P ratio, and the formation of bio-induced HAP was confirmed using micro characterization technologies.

Layered inoculation of anaerobic digestion and anammox granular sludges for fast start-up of an anammox reactor

Yanxu Liu et al.

Summary: Layered inoculation of anaerobic digestion and anammox granular sludges can lead to rapid start-up of anammox, with increased nitrogen loading rate and nitrogen removal rate. The study found that AD granular sludge exhibited anammox activity and could be cultured into anammox granular sludge for accelerated reactor start-up. Adsorption, interception, and domestication enhanced the biomass of anammox bacteria, addressing slow start-up issues in industrial applications.

Efficient phosphorus recovery by enhanced hydroxyapatite formation in a high loading anammox expanded bed reactor at 15 °C

Haiyuan Ma et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated the feasibility of simultaneous nitrogen removal and phosphorus recovery under low temperature conditions using a novel process combining anammox and HAP crystallization. The efficiency for both nitrogen removal and phosphorus recovery was higher than 80% through gradually increasing nitrogen and phosphorus loading rates.

A successful start-up of an anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) coupled mainstream partial nitritation-anammox (PN/A) system: A pilot-scale study on in-situ NOB elimination, AnAOB growth kinetics, and mainstream treatment performance

Jiang Wu et al.

Summary: The study proposes an innovative treatment process that combines AnMBR with a PN/A system for carbon-neutral municipal wastewater treatment. Through a 255-day start-up process, it was demonstrated that the AnMBR-PN/A process effectively eliminates NOB while retaining AOB community in suspended sludge. The mainstream treatment results showed that the TN removal performance meets discharge limits and the AnMBR-PN/A process has potential for carbon-neutral wastewater treatment plants.

Anammox bacteria in treating ammonium rich wastewater: Recent perspective and appraisal

Chanusha Weralupitiya et al.

Summary: The discovery of the anammox process has provided an eco-friendly and low-cost means of treating ammonia-rich wastewater efficiently. However, limitations in practical applications include short doubling time and sensitivity towards nutrients and environmental alterations such as salinity and temperature. Further studies are needed to overcome these limitations and broaden the application of the anammox process.

Achieving superior nitrogen removal performance in low-strength ammonium wastewater treatment by cultivating concentrated, highly dispersive, and easily settleable granule sludge in a one-stage partial nitritation/anammox-HAP reactor

Yan Guo et al.

Summary: The application of granule sludge in a one-stage partial nitritation/anammox (PNA) reactor achieved high nitrogen removal rate in low-strength ammonium wastewater (LSAWW) treatment. Addition of hydroxyapatite (HAP) increased the density of granules, improved settlability of sludge and made high biomass achievable in a short HRT.
