Characterization of peroxyacetyl nitrate (PAN) under different PM2.5 concentration in wintertime at a North China rural site

Zhuoyu Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the wintertime characteristics of photochemistry in a rural area of North China Plain. It found that the concentration of peroxyacetyl nitrate (PAN), a secondary pollutant of photochemical pollution, showed different diurnal variation and formation rate under different PM2.5 concentrations. The results also indicated that even under severe pollution levels, there were sufficient light intensity and precursor concentrations to generate a large amount of PAN, exacerbating haze formation.

Chemical significance and source apportionment of fine particles (PM2.5) in an industrial port area in East Asia

Chung-Shin Yuan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the chemical significance, seasonal variation, spatial distribution, and sources of fine particles (PM2.5) in an industrial port area. The results showed that both local sources and long-range transport contributed to the increase in PM2.5 levels. Secondary inorganic aerosols (SIAs) dominated the water-soluble ions (WSIs) in PM2.5. Crustal elements and trace elements were the main contributors to the metallic content of PM2.5. Ship emissions and biomass burning were identified as important sources of PM2.5. The study also found that polluted air masses in winter were blown from the north by Asian Northeastern Monsoons (ANMs), while clean air masses in summer came mainly from the oceans via Asian Southwestern Monsoons (ASMs). The dominant sources of PM2.5 in the Kaohsiung Seaport were industrial emissions, secondary aerosols, ship/vehicular exhausts, oceanic spray, and soil dust.

Long-Term Change Analysis of PM2.5 and Ozone Pollution in China's Most Polluted Region during 2015-2020

Yanpeng Li et al.

Summary: This study conducted a time change analysis of fine particulate (PM2.5) emission in the multi-resolution emission inventory in China (MEIC) from 2013 to 2016. The results showed a decreasing trend in PM2.5 emissions year by year, with a 28.5% decrease in the annual total emission in 2016 compared to 2013. Comparison of the observation data of PM2.5 and ozone (O-3) revealed obvious seasonal changes in both pollutants, with higher PM2.5 emission in autumn and winter compared to summer. The study also indicated that PM2.5 concentrations in Beijing have been decreasing since 2015, while O-3 concentrations showed an upward trend. Beijing and Shanghai saw a decrease in PM2.5 concentrations from 2015 to 2020, while Xuzhou, Zhengzhou, and Hefei experienced an increase in PM2.5 concentrations during the same period. These findings highlight the decreasing threat of PM2.5 pollution in China and the growing difficulty in controlling ozone levels.

Summary: Frequent severe haze episodes occurred in Beijing from February to March 2021, and the causes were unclear. The study found increased primary emissions and elevated concentrations of chloride, black carbon, and primary organic aerosol during this period. By analyzing the effects of meteorology, the changes in PM2.5 from 2020 to 2021 were reduced and showed the dominant roles of stagnant meteorology and secondary production in severe haze formation in March 2021.

Summary: Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) significantly impacts global air quality and human health. This study identified the sources and seasonal variation of nitrogen and carbon aerosols in PM2.5 in typical cities of Zhejiang. Nitrogen aerosols were primarily influenced by NH3 and NOX emitted from motor vehicle exhaust, while carbon aerosols were mainly affected by motor vehicle exhaust, coal combustion, biomass combustion, and dust.

Summary: Aerosol nitrate has become the most abundant compound in aerosol pollution in eastern China. The response of nitrate to nitrogen oxide (NOx) reduction is still unclear despite the government's stringent policies. The study found that elevated dinitrogen pentoxide (N2O5) hydrolysis is responsible for the observed increase in nitrate.

Summary: This study investigates the mechanism of haze formation by analyzing the level of PM2.5, meteorological factors, and chemical reactions in Shanghai in 2018. The results show that secondary inorganic aerosols and organic matter contribute significantly to PM2.5, and the explosive growth of PM2.5 is driven by stagnant conditions and chemical reactions.

Current challenges of improving visibility due to increasing nitrate fraction in PM2.5 during the haze days in Beijing, China

Shuya Hu et al.

Summary: The annual mean PM2.5 mass concentration in Beijing, China has decreased due to strict emission controls, but the nitrate (NO3-) mass fraction in PM2.5 has been increasing gradually.
