Stochastic processes regulate belowground community assembly in alpine grasslands on the Tibetan Plateau

Luyao Kang et al.

Summary: Understanding the biogeographical patterns and underlying processes of belowground community assembly is crucial for predicting soil functions and their responses to global environmental change. Research in alpine ecosystems on the Tibetan Plateau has shown differences in belowground community assembly among trophic levels, with stochastic processes playing a primary role in regulating community assembly.

Rangeland application of biochar and rotational grazing interact to influence soil and plant nutrient dynamics

Si Gao et al.

Summary: This field study showed that the use of wood biochar on rangeland soils with short-term rotational grazing could have a neutral to positive effect on soil and plant nutrients. Trampling alone increased surface soil density and reduced soil nutrients, but the addition of biochar prior to trampling improved soil aeration and grass nutrition. The incorporation of biochar into soils was facilitated by trampling, and biochar significantly increased available organic P while reducing inorganic P in soils.

Grazing influences biomass production and protein content of alpine meadows

Laia Jarque-Bascunana et al.

Summary: Alpine grasslands are crucial for carbon sequestration and food supply, but they face threats from agricultural abandonment and overgrazing. This study examines the effects of grazing on grassland vegetation in the Eastern Pyrenees, Spain, and finds that grazing improves biomass production and protein content, while having negligible effects on woody vegetation.

No thermal adaptation in soil extracellular enzymes across a temperate grassland region

Yanyu Deng et al.

Summary: The decomposition rates of soil organic matter are affected by thermal adaptation, which is related to the average annual temperature of the soil environment. This study found that soil extracellular enzyme activity and its temperature sensitivity were not related to the mean annual temperature in grassland sites. Factors like soil pH, substrates, and texture had a greater influence on the extracellular enzyme activity. The positive correlation between the temperature sensitivity of extracellular enzyme activity and mean annual temperature contradicted the thermodynamic theory.

Response of grassland soil respiration to experimental warming: The long-term effects may be greater than we thought

Ziwei Chen et al.

Summary: Soil respiration in response to climate warming shows significant heterogeneity, with factors such as duration of warming, warming methods, soil nutrients, and precipitation influencing its response. The study found a three-phase pattern in the response of soil respiration to warming, with a greater long-term response compared to short-term response. The study also highlights the potential overestimation of carbon release in cold grasslands if water deficiency is not considered.

Transhumant Sheep Grazing Enhances Ecosystem Multifunctionality in Productive Mountain Grasslands: A Case Study in the Cantabrian Mountains

Jose Manuel Fernandez-Guisuraga et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of short- and long-term grazing abandonment on the ability of mountain grasslands to sustain multiple ecosystem functions. The results showed that grazing exclusion significantly decreased overall ecosystem multifunctionality, especially in long-term exclusion areas. However, the decline in multifunctionality in short-term exclusion areas was not significant compared to grazed areas.

Environmental factors, bacterial interactions and plant traits jointly regulate epiphytic bacterial community composition of two alpine grassland species

Yang Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the factors influencing the composition of epiphytic microbial communities on alpine plants. The results showed that environmental factors, microbial interactions, and host plant traits all played significant roles in shaping the composition of these communities. Mean annual precipitation was found to be the most important factor, with a stronger effect on the phyllosphere compared to the rhizosphere. Leaf trichome cover and plant height were identified as important host plant traits affecting the composition of the phyllosphere bacterial community.

Assessing the long-term impact of urease and nitrification inhibitor use on microbial community composition, diversity and function in grassland soil

Aoife M. Duff et al.

Summary: This study assessed the impact of urease inhibitors and nitrification inhibitors on soil microbial communities and biological function in grasslands. The results show that the use of inhibitors had no impact on non-target microbial communities, but had a significant effect on the nitrification process and increased N2O emissions in some treatments.

Soil bacterial community responses to short-term grazing exclusion in a degraded alpine shrubland-grassland ecotone

Jinlan Wang et al.

Summary: The research showed that grazing exclusion has minimal impact on soil bacterial alpha-diversity, while soil bacterial community composition is significantly influenced by soil chemical properties. The higher plant community alpha-diversity and soil nutrition in alpine shrublands did not result in higher soil bacterial alpha-diversity.

Adaptive multi-paddock grazing improves water infiltration in Canadian grassland soils

Timm F. Dobert et al.

Summary: This study conducted on 52 ranches found that adaptive grazing can increase water infiltration in grassland soils, while higher bulk density soils were associated with decreased infiltration rates. This highlights the potential of specialized rotational grazing systems using cattle to improve soil hydrologic function in grazed grasslands.

Pastoralism in the highest peaks: Role of the traditional grazing systems in maintaining biodiversity and ecosystem function in the alpine Himalaya

Tenzing Ingty

Summary: Rangelands, including the Himalayan region, are facing threats due to grazing bans in protected areas. Traditional transhumant pastoral systems may enhance biodiversity and ecosystem function, challenging the notion that complete restriction of open grazing meets conservation and socioeconomic goals. Evidence-based policies are needed to conserve the rich biodiversity of vulnerable regions.

Environmental and Anthropogenic Factors Shape Major Bacterial Community Types Across the Complex Mountain Landscape of Switzerland

Johanna Mayerhofer et al.

Summary: The study in Switzerland's mountainous landscape found that the distribution of soil bacterial communities was largely shaped by environmental factors, with pH being the most important one. Different types of soil bacterial communities were mainly determined by their preference for soil pH, indicating associations with biogeographic regions and land-use types.
