Prediction of high-risk areas of soil heavy metal pollution with multiple factors on a large scale in industrial agglomeration areas

Zhaoyue Liu et al.

Summary: Industrialization has increased the risk of heavy metal pollution in soil. This study explored the factors and interactions affecting the distribution of heavy metals in a typical area, and predicted high-risk areas of heavy metal pollution in the Xiangjiang River basin. High-risk areas were primarily concentrated in the upper and middle reaches, with significant overlapping of multiple heavy metals in certain regions.

Refining health risk assessment of heavy metals in vegetables from high geochemical background areas: Role of bioaccessibility and cytotoxicity

Cheng-Chen Wang et al.

Summary: A study was conducted on mint and pea sprouts from Yunnan, China to assess the levels of heavy metals, their bioaccessibilities, and gastrointestinal cytotoxicity. The results showed that some of the heavy metals exceeded safety standards and induced cytotoxicity in human intestinal cells. Therefore, the gastrointestinal cytotoxicity should be taken into account when evaluating the health risks of these vegetables.

An integrated exploration on health risk assessment quantification of potentially hazardous elements in soils from the perspective of sources

Hui-Hao Jiang et al.

Summary: The study assessed soil pollution of potentially hazardous elements using regional geochemical baseline concentrations, showing varying levels of pollution across different land types. Analysis identified industrial activities, natural sources, agricultural practices, and traffic emissions as major sources of potentially hazardous elements. Different land types had different primary sources of health risks, with agricultural practices and industrial activities being the main sources under different conditions.

Identification of Soil Heavy Metal Sources in a Large-Scale Area Affected by Industry

Yuan Xu et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the sources of heavy metals in the surface soil of the Chenzhou industrial impact area in Hunan province, China, using multiple methods including PMF analysis. The results showed that different regions were affected by various anthropogenic factors such as mining, traffic emissions, and agricultural activities, resulting in different heavy metal concentrations. The study provided more accurate and detailed insights into heavy metal pollution sources, which can be useful for regional enterprise management and soil pollution control decision-making.

Development of a new framework to estimate the environmental risk of heavy metal(loid)s focusing on the spatial heterogeneity of the industrial layout

Qi Wang et al.

Summary: Industrialization and urbanization have heightened the risk of heavy metal(loid)s, leading to environmental hazards. Regional environmental risk assessment should consider spatial heterogeneity and risk factor interaction. The running time of the industry is a crucial risk factor, with adjustments to industrial structure and control of running time being effective in mitigating environmental risks.

An integrated method for source apportionment of heavy metal(loid)s in agricultural soils and model uncertainty analysis

Yuntao Wang et al.

Summary: This study utilized multivariate statistical analysis, GIS mapping, Pb isotopic ratio analysis, and positive matrix factorization to accurately determine the sources of heavy metals in orchard soil in Karst-regions. The main sources of heavy metals were found to be soil parent materials, fertilizer application, and a mixed source of industrial activity and manure. Uncertainty analysis indicated that heavy metals with lower percentage contributions had higher uncertainty, providing valuable insights for future applications.

Soil aggregate-associated mercury (Hg) and organic carbon distribution and microbial community characteristics under typical farmland-use types

Penggang Pei et al.

Summary: The study revealed that rice field soils have a higher ability to accumulate mercury, and soil aggregate-associated mercury and organic carbon enrichment decreases with particle size under different farmland-use types. The diversity and composition of soil microbial community were greatly affected by farmland-use types, with significant differences observed between rice field soils and dry land soils.
