Long-term characterization of aerosol chemistry in cold season from 2013 to 2020 in Beijing, China

Lu Lei et al.

Summary: The study found significant changes in aerosol chemistry in Beijing during the cold season, with most chemical species showing reductions, especially chloride and organics. Starting from 2018, the changes in aerosol chemistry were closely related to different reductions in gaseous precursors and enhanced secondary processes.

Comparative Assessment of Cooking Emission Contributions to Urban Organic Aerosol Using Online Molecular Tracers and Aerosol Mass Spectrometry Measurements

Dan Dan Huang et al.

Summary: In this study conducted in Shanghai, collocated OA measurements with AMS and TAG were used to identify primary COA (PCOA) and oxygenated COA (OCOA). Criteria for identifying COA factors from AMS analysis with different oxygenation levels were proposed, and two positive matrix factorization approaches were compared for COA quantification. The study highlights the significant impacts of cooking activities on urban air quality and the advantages of conducting collocated measurements using multiple high time resolution mass spectrometric techniques in advancing our understanding of atmospheric OA chemistry.

Secondary Organic Aerosol Formation of Fleet Vehicle Emissions in China: Potential Seasonality of Spatial Distributions

Keren Liao et al.

Summary: The study investigates the formation potential of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) from vehicle emissions in urban areas, with results showing relatively shorter photochemical ages for maximum SOA production under high-NOx conditions compared to previous studies. This suggests a different spatial distribution of SOA in different seasons due to the balance of functionalization and fragmentation processes. The research also highlights the importance of regulating gaseous vehicular precursors to improve air quality.

Modeling secondary organic aerosol formation from volatile chemical products

Elyse A. Pennington et al.

Summary: Research developed a new model to represent SOA formation from VCP emissions and found that VCPs could contribute up to half of anthropogenic SOA in Los Angeles. The model estimated that VCPs produce 1.67 μg m(-3) of SOA per day, double the current model predictions, and successfully reduced the SOA mass concentration bias from -75% to -58% when compared to observations in Los Angeles.

Formation and evolution of secondary organic aerosols derived from urban-lifestyle sources: vehicle exhaust and cooking emissions

Zirui Zhang et al.

Summary: The study found that urban-lifestyle SOAs derived from vehicle exhaust and cooking emissions had distinct features in terms of SOA mass growth potential, oxidation pathways, and mass spectra. The SOA/POA mass ratios of vehicle groups were significantly higher than those of cooking groups, with different types of organic aerosols produced after chemical aging.

Mass spectral characterization of secondary organic aerosol from urban cooking and vehicular sources

Wenfei Zhu et al.

Summary: The study conducted experiments on secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation from urban cooking and vehicular sources using a high-resolution time-of-flight aerosol mass spectrometer. Results showed that cooking styles had a greater impact on aged COA mass spectra than oxidation conditions, while oxidation conditions significantly affected aged HOA spectra more than vehicle operating conditions. Mass spectra similarity analysis and positive matrix factorization were used to establish the POA and SOA mass spectra of these sources, and the improved ME-2 model better quantified the contribution of POA and SOA from cooking and vehicular sources compared to traditional ambient PMF results. This work established the vehicle and cooking SOA source profiles for the first time and can be further used in OA source apportionment in the ambient atmosphere.

Secondary organic aerosols from anthropogenic volatile organic compounds contribute substantially to air pollution mortality

Benjamin A. Nault et al.

Summary: The production of ASOA is strongly correlated with the reactivity of specific anthropogenic volatile organic compounds, with differences in ASOA production between cities explained by variations in emissions of aromatics and intermediate- and semi-volatile organic compounds. An improved model estimates that ASOA contributes to 340,000 PM2.5-related premature deaths per year, over an order of magnitude higher than previous studies. However, the extrapolation from cities with detailed studies to regions with larger uncertainties in emissions is a limitation of this study. Further development of institutional air quality management infrastructure and comprehensive air quality campaigns in specific regions are needed for progress in this area.

Summary: The study revealed that the seasonal variations in submicron particles at the Xinglong background mountainous site in the NCP are significantly influenced by aging processes and regional transport, with an increased contribution of aerosol nitrate in summer highlighting the critical importance of regional reductions in nitrogen oxide emissions for alleviating nitrate-dominated haze events over the NCP.
