A higher probability of detecting lensed supermassive black hole binaries by LISA

Zucheng Gao et al.

Summary: Gravitational lensing of gravitational waves is a powerful tool to study the matter distribution in the universe. This study revisits the wave-optics effects induced by dark matter haloes on the gravitational wave signals of merging massive black hole binaries, and investigates the possibility of detecting these effects using the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA). The results show that the effects of dark matter haloes on the gravitational wave signals can be distinguished even for large impact parameters, suggesting a higher probability of detecting wave-optics effects than previous studies.

An Improved GPU-based Ray-shooting Code for Gravitational Microlensing

Wenwen Zheng et al.

Summary: We propose an improved inverse-ray-shooting code for generating microlensing magnification maps using GPUs. By introducing GPU acceleration, using a rectangular lens plane, and applying interpolation methods, we greatly increase the speed and accuracy compared to traditional methods.

Search for Lensing Signatures in the Gravitational-Wave Observations from the First Half of LIGO-Virgo's Third Observing Run

R. Abbott et al.

Summary: Researchers searched for signatures of gravitational lensing in gravitational-wave signals from compact binary coalescences. They studied lensing rates, implications of non-observation of strong lensing, potential multiple images due to strong lensing, and possible wave-optics effects. While some signals showed nominal consistency with the strong lensing hypothesis, taking into account population priors, selection effects, and prior odds against lensing, these events did not provide sufficient evidence to confirm lensing.

On the Identification of Individual Gravitational-wave Image Types of a Lensed System Using Higher-order Modes

Justin Janquart et al.

Summary: The presence of higher-order modes enables the identification of individual image types for observed gravitational-wave events when two lensed images are detected, leading to unambiguous confirmation of lensing. The higher-order mode content can be analyzed more accurately with strongly lensed gravitational-wave events.

Gravitational lensing of gravitational waves: effect of microlens population in lensing galaxies

Anuj Mishra et al.

Summary: In this study, the wave effects of microlensing in gravitational wave signals were extensively investigated, revealing that the impact of microlensing becomes increasingly significant with higher macro-magnification values. It was found that microlensing cannot be neglected when inferring source parameters for macro-magnifications greater than or equal to 15, and for extremely high macro-magnifications exceeding 100, there is a risk of missed detection of lensed signals.

Stellar-mass microlensing of gravitational waves

Mark H. Y. Cheung et al.

Summary: The study reveals that gravitational waves can be microlensed by stars, leading to observable irregular waveforms but also introducing systematic errors. Numerical simulations show that diffraction effects introduced by microlensing are significant in the LIGO frequency band, significantly suppressing the magnification by stellar lenses.

Identifying type II strongly lensed gravitational-wave images in third-generation gravitational-wave detectors

Yijun Wang et al.

Summary: Strong gravitational lensing affects the inferred gravitational wave source parameters and cosmological environment. Distinguishing strongly lensed GW images from unlensed sources is challenging, but mismatch in waveform templates can be used for this purpose. Predictions show a significant number of distinguishable lensed GW sources annually with the planned noise spectra of various detectors.
