Machine learning techniques for pavement condition evaluation

Nima Sholevar et al.

Summary: This study reviews the latest techniques in pavement condition data evaluation using machine learning methods, specifically focusing on the application of image classification, object detection, and segmentation in pavement distress assessment. The study also evaluates pavement automated data collection tools and condition indices from the perspective of machine learning applications. The review concludes that the overall trend in pavement condition evaluation is to apply machine learning techniques, although there are some limitations in detecting certain pavement distresses with complex patterns and indicating the severity and density of distresses, which warrant further research.

Deep learning-based road damage detection and classification for multiple countries

Deeksha Arya et al.

Summary: Many municipalities and road authorities lack the technology, know-how, and funds to afford state-of-the-art equipment for data collection and analysis of road damages. While some countries, like Japan, have developed Smartphone-based methods for automatic road condition monitoring, others still struggle to find efficient solutions. This study assesses usability of the Japanese model for other countries, proposes a large-scale road damage dataset, and models capable of detecting and classifying road damages in multiple countries.
