Fracture variation in high-rank coal induced by hydraulic fracturing using X-ray computer tomography and digital volume correlation

Xianglong Wang et al.

Summary: This study conducted a laboratory simulation of hydraulic fracturing in coal and used X-ray computer tomography (CT) and digital volume correlation (DVC) to analyze and quantify the changes in fractures induced by hydraulic fracturing. The results showed that hydraulic fracturing increased the aperture, volume, and surface area of fractures in coal, and simplified their morphology. The study also revealed the significant influence range and connectivity of fractures caused by hydraulic fracturing.

Hydraulic fracture propagation at weak interfaces between contrasting layers in shale using XFEM with energy-based criterion

JiaNing Zhang et al.

Summary: This study introduces a novel energy-based fracture propagation criterion for predicting hydraulic fractures' propagation at weak interfaces between contrasting layers. By combining theoretical and numerical methods, the influencing factors of hydraulic fractures propagation on weak interfaces are investigated, the crack paths are analyzed in detail, and the mechanism of fracture propagation is further revealed.

Fracture behaviour and seismic response of naturally fractured coal subjected to true triaxial stresses and hydraulic fracturing

Wenzhuo Cao et al.

Summary: The research shows that the internal natural fracture networks in coal blocks have a significant impact on hydraulic fracturing behavior and seismic response. Experimental results indicate that the complexity of natural fractures influences the intrusion of hydraulic fracturing fluid and the expansion of fractures.

Anisotropic failure behaviour and breakdown pressure interpretation of hydraulic fracturing experiments on shale

Jun Wang et al.

Summary: The laboratory hydraulic fracturing tests on Longmaxi shale samples from southwest China revealed significant brittle failure characteristics and anisotropic phenomena, with main failure patterns identified as split, split-bending, and slip along the bedding plane. Anomalously high breakdown pressure was observed in the samples at different layer orientations, which led to the development of a new tensile stress-based model for interpreting such unusual pressures. This study may have practical implications for field hydraulic fracturing operations.
