Venous overload choroidopathy: A hypothetical framework for central serous chorioretinopathy and allied disorders

Richard F. Spaide et al.

Summary: Central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC) is characterized by fluid leakage at the level of the retinal pigment epithelium, leading to macular detachment. Recent evaluations have shown that eyes with CSC have similar choroidal vascular abnormalities as eyes following occlusion of the vortex veins or carotid cavernous sinus fistulas. Abnormal venous outflow from the choroid appears to be a key factor in the pathophysiology of CSC.

REGIONAL SCLERAL THICKNESS AS A RISK FACTOR FOR CENTRAL SEROUS CHORIORETINOPATHY

Richard F. Spaide et al.

Summary: This study measured the thickness of the sclera in patients with CSC and controls using ultrasound and optical coherence tomography, and found that the equatorial and posterior scleral thicknesses were independent predictors of CSC. This finding supports the theory of venous overload choroidopathy.

PULSATILE FILLING OF DILATED CHOROIDAL VESSELS IN MACULAR WATERSHED ZONES

Chui Ming Gemmy Cheung et al.

Summary: This study observed pulsatile filling of dilated choroidal veins in patients with exudative retinal diseases, with variations in pressure gradients in the affected veins. The dilated segments may lead to pooling of venous blood, which may play a role in these diseases.
