Estimating construction waste truck payload volume using monocular vision

Junjie Chen et al.

Summary: Quantifying truck-loaded materials is challenging in construction and demolition waste management. A novel CDW volume estimation algorithm based on monocular vision is proposed in this study, achieving accurate quantification of specific material components from a single image and showing promising results in practical applications.

Design for manufacture and assembly (DfMA) enablers for offsite interior design and construction

Zhikang Bao et al.

Summary: To support the offsite IDC and its production line, standardized procedure, automated machinery, and supply chain, 10 DfMA enablers are adopted, such as early collaboration, design standardization and simplification, and light material selection. These findings indicate a paradigm shift not only in interior design methodology but also in IDC professional practice process.

Major barriers to information sharing in reverse logistics of construction and demolition waste

Zezhou Wu et al.

Summary: Reverse logistics is crucial for construction and demolition waste management. Information sharing is considered effective in strengthening coordination, but its adoption in C&D waste RL is unsatisfactory. This study systematically identifies major barriers and analyzes their hierarchical relationships using ISM and MICMAC techniques. The findings highlight uncertainty in the market environment, lack of trust among stakeholders, and inadequate government support as the three most important barriers negatively influencing IS in RL of C&D waste.

Computer vision for solid waste sorting: A critical review of academic research

Weisheng Lu et al.

Summary: Waste sorting using computer vision, robotics, and other smart technologies has gained increasing attention in municipal solid waste (MSW) management. This paper critically reviews the academic research on computer vision-enabled MSW sorting, focusing on prevalent computer vision algorithms, their technical rationales, prediction performance, and distribution of research outputs. The review reveals a shift from traditional machine learning to deep learning algorithms in waste sorting and highlights the need for considering real-world complexities and open sharing of waste image datasets for further research.

To walk or not to walk? Examining non-linear effects of streetscape greenery on walking propensity of older adults

Linchuan Yang et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the impact of streetscape greenery on the walking behavior of older adults using neural network technology and machine learning methods. The results showed that streetscape greenery has a positive effect on walking propensity within a certain range, but the positive association no longer holds outside the range.

A four-quadrant conceptual framework for analyzing extended producer responsibility in offshore prefabrication construction

Jinying Xu et al.

Summary: This research develops a conceptual framework to analyze, negotiate, and allocate EPR responsibility associated with offshore prefabrication. The framework comprises four quadrants representing four typical scenarios for implementation of the EPR principle, applicable for various EPR analyses and project delivery environments. It will be helpful for devising public policies to achieve a win-win situation for offshore and onshore stakeholders.

Chemicals of concern in construction and demolition waste fine residues: A systematic literature review

Adane Sewhunegn Molla et al.

Summary: This study reviewed research on chemicals of concern in construction and demolition waste fine residues, finding heavy metals and toxic gases in landfills, as well as organic chemicals such as PAHs, PCBs, and flame retardants. Health implications include carcinogenicity, organ damage, and neurological disorders. Despite environmental and health issues, C&DW fine residues are often disposed in landfills without adequate management strategies.

Tackling the last mile problem in renovation waste management: A case study in China

Zhikang Bao et al.

Summary: This study reports good practices for dealing with the last mile problem in renovation waste management in a city in China. The city effectively solved the issue by developing a multi-layer, nested waste management system empowered by smart technologies and collaboration from multiple stakeholders coordinated by the government. However, the longevity of renovation waste management depends on confronting challenges such as achieving cost and benefit balance, defining clearer standards and policies, and raising stakeholders' awareness.

An analytical framework of zero waste construction site: Two case studies of Shenzhen, China

Weisheng Lu et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the concept, boundaries, assessment period, and operation strategies of zero waste construction sites, and establishes an analytical framework through case studies. It points out that achieving the zero-waste goal on individual construction sites is challenging but feasible, requiring consideration of open, off-site strategies.

Revisiting environmental Kuznets curve with HDI: new evidence from cross-country panel data

Akseer Hussain et al.

Summary: This study investigates the presence of the Environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) in a panel of 30 countries and identifies a U-shaped relationship between the Human Development Index (HDI) and CO2 emissions. The econometric framework includes Pooled OLS model, fixed effect model, and fixed effect with instrumental variable model, showing strong evidence of EKC for this panel of countries and individual groups.
