Epidemiological and diagnostic aspects of feline leishmaniasis with emphasis on Brazil: a narrative review

Luiz F. J. Nascimento et al.

Summary: Feline leishmaniasis (FeL) is now considered an emerging disease in Brazil, with an estimated prevalence of 8% and Leishmania infantum being the most prevalent species. Cats infected with Leishmania typically show skin lesions, mainly in the cephalic region, and diagnosis is primarily conducted through serological tools. However, further research is needed on the immune response and diagnostic methods for FeL in cats.

Responsible companion animal guardianship is associated with canine visceral leishmaniasis: an analytical cross-sectional survey in an urban area of southeastern Brazil

Paulo Henrique Araujo Soares et al.

Summary: This study investigated the prevalence of canine visceral leishmaniasis (CVL) in a city in southeastern Brazil and found that variables related to better dog care were associated with lower chances of infection. Specifically, dogs sheltered outside the house and with free access to the streets, as well as guardians without formal education or with a university degree, had a significantly higher risk of CVL. Additionally, dogs acquired as puppies had half the chance of developing the disease compared to adult dogs. Geographically weighted logistic regression showed that the strengths of predictor/CVL associations varied depending on the studied geographical space, but the associations were always in the same directions.

Genetic structure of allopatric populations of Lutzomyia longipalpis sensu lato in Brazil

Lucas Christian de Sousa-Paula et al.

Summary: Lutzomyia longipalpis sensu lato is a complex group of phlebotomine sand fly species with morphological variations, serving as vectors of visceral leishmaniasis. Studies have revealed the presence of an uncertain number of cryptic species within this group in Brazil.
