An integrated assessment on the warming effects of urbanization and agriculture in highly developed urban agglomerations of China

Zhangmei Yan et al.

Summary: Urbanization and agriculture, two major land use activities, have significantly altered the land surface temperature in China's three most developed urban agglomerations. Urban-dominated lands show substantial daytime warming, especially in the south subtropical region, while crop-dominated lands also exhibit dramatic daytime warming, particularly in areas with intensive agricultural activities. These warming effects are mainly attributed to urban expansion and changes in agricultural land use practices.

Summary: Understanding the dynamics of urban heat islands (UHI) at different time scales is crucial for comprehending their variations. This study reveals that UHI dynamics exhibit various patterns and are influenced by both climate and land cover types. These findings contribute to a deeper understanding of UHI dynamics.

Albedo changes caused by future urbanization contribute to global warming

The relationship between land surface temperature and artificial impervious surface fraction in 682 global cities: spatiotemporal variations and drivers

Qiquan Yang et al.

Summary: This study systematically analyzed the relationship between land surface temperature (LST) and artificial impervious surface fraction (AISF) in 682 global cities. The results show that LST tends to increase with AISF in most cities, with variations depending on climate zones and seasons. Driver analyses suggest that changes in surface biophysical properties play a significant role in the spatial-temporal variation of LST.

Global multi-model projections of local urban climates

Lei Zhao et al.

Summary: Under a high-emissions scenario, cities in the United States, Middle East, northern Central Asia, northeastern China, and inland South America and Africa are estimated to experience substantial warming of more than 4 K by the end of the century. Our findings highlight the critical need for global multi-model projections of local urban climates to support climate-sensitive development and reduce urban heat stress through green infrastructure intervention.

Simultaneous investigation of surface and canopy urban heat islands over global cities

Huilin Du et al.

Summary: Interpreting the similarities and dissimilarities in spatiotemporal variations and various controls between surface and canopy urban heat islands is critical for understanding their vertical structure. Analysis of 366 global cities shows that the annual mean SUHI intensity is generally higher than CUHI intensity, with variations observed in different climate zones. Urbanization increases diurnal temperature range based on land surface temperature but decreases it based on surface air temperature. Vegetation coverage and impervious surface percentage have different impacts on SUHII and CUHII, with population size showing greater influence at night. Precipitation has varying effects on SUHII and CUHII depending on the time of day.

Anthropogenic emissions and urbanization increase risk of compound hot extremes in cities

Jun Wang et al.

Summary: Observation and simulation data across eastern China indicate increasing risks of compound heat extremes in urban areas, attributed to urban expansion and anthropogenic emissions. These compound events are more dangerous than single daytime or nighttime heat extremes, especially for female and older urban residents. Future emissions and urbanization are projected to further increase the frequency of these events, leading to a significant growth in urban population exposure to heat threats.

Perturbation of Urbanization to Earth's Surface Energy Balance

Pengke Shen et al.

Summary: Urbanization has a significant impact on surface energy balance and temperature, with spatial heterogeneity and temporal asymmetries. The decline in latent heat, reduced sensible heat, and ground heat storage play key roles in triggering surface warming in urban areas. The effects of urbanization on surface biophysical processes are closely related to local climate-vegetation regimes.
