Nitrogen and phosphorus co-doped carbon dots for developing highly flame retardant poly (vinyl alcohol) composite films

Shu-juan Yu et al.

Summary: In this study, nitrogen and phosphorus co-doped fluorescent carbon dots (N,P-CDs) were synthesized and incorporated into PVA matrix to prepare flame retardant composite films. The addition of a small amount of N,P-CDs significantly improved the flame retardancy and thermal stability of the films without affecting transparency, and endowed the films with UV absorption ability.

Anti-UV and hydrophobic dual-functional coating fabrication for flame retardant polyester fabrics by surface-initiated PET RAFT technique

Qiang Hu et al.

Summary: Inspired by living radical polymerization (LRP), surface-initiated LPR technology has great potential in controlling and tailoring polymer coatings. In this study, a surface-initiated photoinduced electron transfer-reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization (SI-PET-RAFT) method was used to fabricate polymeric brushes with anti-UV and hydrophobic properties on flame retardant polyester fabrics (FRPET). The results showed that this method achieved controlled growth of polymeric brushes on the fabric surface, resulting in improved anti-UV, flame retardant, and hydrophobic properties.

Bioinspired Bola Polys

Yue Sun et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel Bola quaternary ammonium polyether polysiloxane (BQPEPS) with a water transport channel and unique softness performance was successfully synthesized by taking inspiration from natural superhydrophilic structures. The BQPEPS showed better friction coefficient, bending rigidity, and softness compared to commercially available products of two other structures. After multiple washings, the BQPEPS-treated fabrics maintained their smoothness, stiffness, and softness. Moreover, the BQPEPS-treated fabrics exhibited fast wetting time and high water vapor transmission rate. This study demonstrates the potential of Bola polysiloxane in enhancing personal comfort in practical applications.

Improving the flame retardant and antibacterial performance of polyester/cotton blend fabrics with organic-inorganic hybrid coating

Yufan Yang et al.

Summary: In this study, an organic-inorganic hybrid coating was used to enhance the fire safety and antibacterial property of polyester/cotton blend fabrics. The hybrid coating was prepared through the in-situ growth of zirconium phosphate nanosheets and the formation of polyelectrolyte complex using phytic acid and poly(hexamethylene guanidine hydrochloride) via spraying method. The treated fabrics demonstrated self-extinguishing behavior in vertical burning test, increased LOI value and reduced heat release rate. The mechanical properties of the fabric were not significantly affected by the introduction of the coating. Additionally, the treated fabrics exhibited excellent antibacterial activity.

Summary: The addition of phosphorus-containing pyrazolyl derivative (DPAP) flame retardant significantly enhances the flame retardancy, toughness, and transparency of EP materials. The EP/DPAP composite achieves a UL-94 V-0 rating and high LOI value with reduced PHR and THR. Furthermore, the sample exhibits increased elongation at break and only a slight decrease in transmittance. The EP/DPAP composite demonstrates high toughness and transparency, making it suitable for a broader range of applications.

Rapid electrochemical reduction of a typical chlorinated organophosphorus flame retardant on copper foam: degradation kinetics and mechanisms

Liansheng Yang et al.

Summary: In this study, the degradation of a typical CI-OPFR, TCEP, by electrochemical reduction was investigated. The results showed that copper foam as the cathode exhibited the most rapid and effective degradation for TCEP, with removal rates reaching above 95% within 20 minutes for low concentrations. Furthermore, the electrochemical reduction method demonstrated fast and stable degradation for TCEP, providing a promising treatment for CI-OPFRs removal from aqueous environments.
