Shape Permanence in Diarylethene-Functionalized Liquid-Crystal Elastomers Facilitated by Thiol-Anhydride Dynamic Chemistry

Tayler S. Hebner et al.

Summary: In this study, diarylethene-functionalized liquid-crystalline elastomers containing thiol-anhydride bonds were prepared and shown to exhibit reversible and reprogrammable photoinduced actuation. The generated strain could be reversed optically over multiple cycles, and the nematic director could be reprogrammed through heating. These findings have significant implications for the application of liquid-crystalline elastomers.

Humidity-Responsive Liquid Crystalline Network Actuator Showing Synergistic Fluorescence Color Change Enabled by Aggregation Induced Emission Luminogen

Ruochen Lan et al.

Summary: By preparing a bilayer film composed of liquid crystalline networks (LCN) film and hydrochromic aggregation-induced-emission molecule-doped hydrophilic layer, deformation and fluorescence color change under different relative humidity are achieved. The influence of hydrophilic matrix content on the film properties is investigated. Different modes of deformation are enabled by the mechanical anisotropy of the uniform-aligned LCN film.

Multistage Reversible Tg Photomodulation and Hardening of Hydrazone-Containing Polymers

Sirun Yang et al.

Summary: The glass transition temperature (T-g) of polyacrylate- and polymethacrylate-based polymers with bistable hydrazone photoswitches increases after photoisomerization. The study used nanoindentation measurements to confirm the photohardening of the polymeric network. The bistability of the switch allows the material to maintain multiple T-g values based on the Z/E isomer ratio of the hydrazone switch, even at elevated temperatures.

Preparation, property manipulation and application of α-cyanostilbene-containing photoresponsive liquid crystal elastomers with different alkoxy tail length

Zui Liu et al.

Summary: This study reported physically cross-linked photoresponsive liquid crystal elastomers with different alkoxy tail lengths and investigated their phase structure, photo-induced deformation property, and application. The results showed that the glass transition temperature decreased with increasing alkoxy tail length, while the clearing point temperature generally increased. Furthermore, the uniaxially oriented fibers exhibited large bending angles and fast photoresponse speed under UV light, with the bending angle decreasing with longer alkoxy tail length.

Multiple hydrogen-bonded cross-linked photo-responsive liquid crystal elastomers with photo-responsive fluorescence

Zui Liu et al.

Summary: This study focuses on a series of luminescent liquid crystal elastomers with photo-induced deformation behavior and photo-responsive fluorescence. By adjusting the crosslinking agent content, the deformation rate and maximum bending angle of the polymers can be controlled. All prepared LCEs exhibit aggregation-induced emission enhancement (AIEE) characteristic and emit strong fluorescence in solid state.

Tunable Artificial Iris Controlled by Photo/Thermal Exposure Based on Liquid Crystalline Elastomers

Kai Ti Chang et al.

Summary: A tunable artificial iris made from liquid crystalline elastomers is demonstrated in this study, showing reversible pupil widening and closing in response to near-infrared light. The iris is synthesized using a stainless steel mold and coated with polydopamine to enhance photosensitivity. This fabricated artificial iris, with 2D radial motion, is the first example to show a tunable aperture size controlled by surrounding light intensity, and is expected to have potential applications in biomimicry and biomedical science.

Chiral Liquid Crystalline Elastomer for Twisting Motion without Preset Alignment of Mesogens

Lu Yin et al.

Summary: A new type of chiral liquid crystalline elastomer (CLCE) actuator is demonstrated in this study, which can twist without any preset alignment. The direction and degree of twisting are influenced by various factors, including the molecular chirality of the chiral dopant, the aspect ratio and thickness of the CLCE strip, and the chiral dopant content.
