Separation of platinum group metals from model chloride solution using phosphonium-based ionic liquid

Sadia Ilyas et al.

Summary: The study successfully separated Pt, Pd, and Rh through liquid-liquid extraction using an undiluted phosphonium-based ionic liquid, Cyphos IL 101, with high extraction efficiency for Pt and Pd. Rh, however, showed lower extraction efficiency but could be efficiently scrubbed by contacting with HCl solution. Selective back-extraction successfully recovered Pt and Pd, demonstrating the stability and reusability of the ionic liquid.

A review on management of waste three-way catalysts and strategies for recovery of platinum group metals from them

Shiqiang Sun et al.

Summary: Platinum group metals (PGMs), including platinum (Pt), palladium (Pd), and rhodium (Rh), are widely used in automotive three-way catalysts (TWCs) due to their scarcity and growing demand, particularly in China. Recycling PGMs from spent TWCs not only has economic and environmental benefits, but also addresses the supply-demand imbalance. The paper analyzes the global market demand for PGMs, emphasizing the importance of waste TWC management and discussing recycling strategies and future trends.

Intensification reactive recovery of tetravalent platinum from spent catalyst via synergism of TBP/Cyanex 302 system

Raja Norimie Raja Sulaiman et al.

Summary: Synergistic reactive extraction of platinum (IV) was conducted using TBP and Cyanex 302, with the highest extraction efficiency achieved when using a mixture of 0.05 M Cyanex 302 + 0.05 M TBP. Through the synergism system, the concentration of extractants can be reduced by 50% while maintaining a productive extraction process. Additionally, platinum (IV) can be successfully recovered using thiourea in hydrochloric acid.
