Trapped radical behavior of electron beam irradiated polytetrafluoroethylene fine powder at various temperatures

Akihiro Oshima et al.

Summary: By irradiating polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) fine powder with 93% crystallinity under a nitrogen atmosphere using an electron beam (EB) at various temperatures, trapped free radicals in PTFE were studied using electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy. The asymmetrical signals observed in samples exposed to air after irradiation at different temperatures are middle-chain type peroxide macroradicals derived from fluoroalkyl radicals. The radical yields increased with absorbed dose and saturated eventually, with higher irradiation temperatures resulting in higher radical yields compared at the same exposed dose, and the G-value of the radicals increased with increasing irradiation temperatures. It is concluded that the synergistic effect of heat and radiation enhances the chain reaction by the fluorine extraction from the main chain due to the end-chain radical generated via beta-scission after dissociative electron attachment (DEA).
