In January 2007, a single-channel muon detector was installed at King Abdulaziz University in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, for monitoring and studying the variations of cosmic ray muons. This article provides a brief description of the developed detector and discusses some preliminary results, including the impact of atmospheric pressure and temperature, daily variations, and responses to solar disturbances. The performance of the detector was compared with other detectors in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and Oulu, showing comparable results.
In January 2007, King Abdulaziz University, Jeddah (21.5o N; 39.2o E; 14.8 GV), Saudi Arabia, installed a single channel muon detector for monitoring and studying the variations of the cosmic ray (CR) muons. Brief description of the developed detector will be presented. A few results obtained by the detector so far will be given and discussed. These include the impact of the atmospheric pressure and temperature, the daily variations, the responses of the detector to transit and long term of the solar disturbances. Performances of the detector were compared with the King Abdulaziz city for science and technology (KACST) muon detector installed in Riyadh Saudi Arabia and with the Oulu neutron monitor at Oulu and showed comparable results.
