Assessing observation network design predictions for monitoring Antarctic surface temperature

Robert Tardif et al.

Summary: This study evaluates a network design method that uses ensemble sensitivity to predict optimal sampling locations for surface air temperature in Antarctica. The results show the importance of stations on the East Antarctic Plateau, followed by stations in West Antarctica and the Ross Ice Shelf region. Coastal and Peninsula stations provide the least information content.

The importance of simulated errors in observing system simulation experiments

Nikki C. Prive et al.

Summary: The study investigates the role of correlated observation errors in modifying the behavior of the NASA/GMAO OSSE framework. It explores the effects of including or neglecting correlated simulated errors on analysis increment, analysis error, forecast errors, and observation impacts. The use of correlated observations for calibration and validation of the OSSE is also discussed.

Assimilation of DAWN Doppler wind lidar data during the 2017 Convective Processes Experiment (CPEX): impact on precipitation and flow structure

Svetla Hristova-Veleva et al.

Summary: Improvements in 3-D air motion and precipitation structure representation through forecast models and assimilation of observations are crucial for better weather forecasting. Using data from APR-2 and DAWN lidar, NASA's WRF modeling system was used to assess the impact of assimilating high-resolution DAWN measurements, leading to discernible improvements in wind fields and precipitation forecasts.

Validation of Aeolus winds using radiosonde observations and numerical weather prediction model equivalents

Anne Martin et al.

Summary: The study conducted a statistical validation of Aeolus observations, finding significant variations in wind bias and differences between ascending and descending orbit phases. The mean absolute bias for the selected validation area ranged from 1.8-2.3 m s(-1) (Rayleigh) to 1.3-1.9 m s(-1) (Mie), showing good agreement with three independent reference datasets.
