Status on electrodeposited manganese dioxide and biowaste carbon for hybrid capacitors: The case of high-quality oxide composites, mechanisms, and prospects

Kethaki Wickramaarachchi et al.

Summary: Energy is a driving force for technology, life, and society. Renewable energy is expected to be a key part of the future energy mix, leading to the need for low-cost, safe, and reliable energy storage. Electrolytic manganese dioxide has emerged as a popular electrode material due to its advantageous characteristics. This review comprehensively discusses the synthesis, properties, and charge-storage mechanism of MnO2, along with strategies to enhance its performance. The limitations of EMD in comparison to other transition metal oxides are addressed, and potential solutions and future developments are explored.

Surfactant-mediated electrodeposition of a pseudocapacitive manganese dioxide a twofer

Kethaki Wickramaarachchi et al.

Summary: Electrolytic manganese dioxide (EMD) is synthesized using surfactant-mediated manganese sulfate electrolytic solutions. The choice of surfactant and its concentration greatly influence the electrodeposition of manganese dioxide. Benzyldodecyldimethylammonium bromide (B-AB) is found to improve the capacitance of the EMD. Molecular dynamics simulations show that B-AB adsorbs with the aryl group planar to the Pb surface, leading to improved pseudocapacitive performance. The EMD/B-AB demonstrates a high specific capacitance and energy density in an asymmetric capacitor configuration.

Alginate Biopolymer Effect on the Electrodeposition of Manganese Dioxide on Electrodes for Supercapacitors

Kethaki Wickramaarachchi et al.

Summary: Electrolytic manganese dioxide (EMD) synthesized with alginate as a biopolymer additive demonstrated enhanced energy storage capability for electrochemical supercapacitors. The presence of alginate in higher concentrations altered the morphology and particle size of the EMD composites, resulting in a more favorable condition for binding Mn2+ ions and improving capacitance. When coupled with activated carbon, the EMD composite exhibited excellent capacitance retention over 5000 cycles, showing promising potential for energy storage applications.
