Hongying Tang et al.

Summary: Researchers have developed a new type of fuel cell membrane that can operate over a wider temperature range, from -20 to 200 degrees C. This ultramicroporous membrane retains phosphoric acid even under highly humidified conditions and exhibits higher proton conductivity retention compared to conventional membranes. This innovation could simplify heat and water management in fuel cell systems, potentially reducing costs.

Aligned macrocycle pores in ultrathin films for accurate molecular sieving

Zhiwei Jiang et al.

Summary: In this study, we successfully created ordered pores in an ultra-thin nanofilm by synthesizing selectively functionalized macrocycles with differentiated reactivities. The size of the subnanometre macrocycle pores in the nanofilm surfaces could be precisely tailored by varying the macrocycle identity. Compared to disordered membranes, aligned macrocycle membranes exhibited higher permeance and selectivity. In high-value separations, such as enriching cannabidiol oil, the aligned macrocycle membranes achieved significantly faster ethanol transport and higher enrichment.

Side-Chain Length and Dispersity in ROMP Polymers with Pore-Generating Side Chains for Gas Separations

Francesco M. Benedetti et al.

Summary: Bottlebrush polymers with flexible backbones and rigid side chains have been found to exhibit excellent performance in gas separation. This study investigates the effects of side-chain length and dispersity on gas transport properties and plasticization resistance by synthesizing polymers with different side-chain lengths. It was observed that as the side-chain length increased, the surface area and gas permeability of the polymers increased while the gas selectivity loss was minimal. Additionally, an increase in side-chain length also led to improved plasticization resistance.

The effect of chain rigidity and microporosity on the sub-ambient temperature gas separation properties of intrinsic microporous polyimides

Wenhui Ji et al.

Summary: The relationship between the rigidity, microporosity, and ideal gas separation properties in polymers of intrinsic microporosity (PIM) is important but understudied. Research comparing two different PIM polymers, PIM-DB-PI and PIM-PI-1, showed that both rigidity and microporosity play key roles in fine-tuning gas transport through polymer membranes. Microporosity has a dominant effect on gas diffusion selectivity, while rigidity primarily impacts the critical diffusion penetrate size of PIM-PI membranes.

Enhanced molecular selectivity and plasticization resistance in ring-opened Tro•ger's base polymer membranes

Lei Wu et al.

Summary: By ring-opening TB polymers to create hydrogen bonds between polymer chains, the TB-OR membranes exhibit enhanced resistance to CO2-induced plasticization and improved gas separation selectivity. The hydrogen bonds formed between -N-H groups and N atoms in the TB-OR polymers reduce polymer chain mobility and CO2-induced swelling, resulting in better plasticization resistance. The design principles offer a new approach for developing molecularly-selective membranes with enhanced CO2 plasticization resistance, which could be beneficial for CO2 separation and hydrogen purification.
