Evolution of the ultrastructure and polysaccharide composition of flax fibres over time: When history meets science

Alessia Melelli et al.

Summary: Flax fibres have been used by humans for thousands of years, evolving from clothing and sails in ancient times to modern applications in automotive and fashion design. This review focuses on the cultural heritage field, discussing the history of flax fibre use in Europe and the Near East, as well as the degradation mechanisms and characterisation techniques. The study highlights the constructive interchange between engineering and cultural heritage through continuous comparison of antiquity and the contemporary era.

New relations between modification degree, swelling and impedance in anticorrosion chitosan-derivative coatings on magnesium alloy AZ31

Carlos Henrique Michelin Beraldo et al.

Summary: This study investigated environmentally friendly coatings of chitosan-derivatives with natural aldehydes for corrosion protection of magnesium AZ31 alloy. The derivatives were characterized using FTIR and UV-Vis, and the coated samples were analyzed using SEM, potentiodynamic polarization and EIS. The results showed that increased modification degree led to decreased corrosion current density and swelling degree, while impedance modulus increased. The relationship between |Z| and swelling with modification degree was proposed for the first time.
