Response of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet to past and future climate change

Chris R. Stokes et al.

Summary: The East Antarctic Ice Sheet, which contains the majority of Earth's glacier ice, is considered less vulnerable to global warming compared to other ice sheets. However, recent mass loss in certain regions has prompted a re-evaluation of its sensitivity to climate change. While some marine-based catchments are currently losing mass, projections indicate increased accumulation in the East Antarctic Ice Sheet over the next century, maintaining overall balance. However, under high-emissions scenarios beyond 2100, significant ice discharge and sea-level rise could occur unless the Paris Agreement goals are met.

Spatial and Temporal Variability of Diapycnal Mixing in the Indian Ocean

K. Katsumata et al.

Summary: The study shows that the variability of turbulent kinetic energy dissipation and diapycnal diffusivity in the Indian Ocean is mainly dependent on diffusivity, with different patterns in high latitudes and other latitudes. Furthermore, diffusivity from the seabed to 4,000 m above the seabed is positively correlated with topographic roughness and wind power injected through the surface at near-inertial frequencies.

Influence of the Distortion of Vertical Wavenumber Spectra on Estimates of Turbulent Dissipation Using the Finescale Parameterization: Observations in the Antarctic Circumpolar Current

Anne Takahashi et al.

Summary: Finescale parameterizations tend to overestimate turbulent kinetic energy dissipation rates in the Antarctic Circumpolar Current due to the superposition of near-inertial and lee wave packets on the GM-like internal wave field, causing spectral humps in the vertical wavenumber spectra of internal wave energy. This leads to an overestimation of shear and strain spectra in the upper ocean and near the seafloor.
