Plant n-3 PUFA intake may lower the risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease only among subjects with a low intake of marine n-3 PUFAs

Christian S. Bork et al.

Summary: The study suggests that the intake of ALA may be associated with a lower risk of total ASCVD, but only among subjects with a low intake of marine n-3 PUFAs. In individuals with a higher intake of marine n-3 PUFAs, no significant association was observed between ALA intake and ASCVD risk.

Effects of dietary phosphatidylcholine and sphingomyelin on DSS-induced colitis by regulating metabolism and gut microbiota in mice

Qiangqiang Li et al.

Summary: A study found that phosphatidylcholine (PC) has better effects in preventing colitis compared to sphingomyelin (SM), inhibiting colonic tissue lesions and pro-inflammatory cytokines expressions. Furthermore, supplementation of PC and SM can impact gut microbiota abundance and metabolism. These findings provide a scientific foundation for further research in developing more effective dietary intervention strategies.

EPA and DHA differentially coordinate the crosstalk between host and gut microbiota and block DSS-induced colitis in mice by a reinforced colonic mucus barrier

Jian Fang et al.

Summary: The study found that EPA and DHA have different effects in ulcerative colitis. High-dose EPA can enhance the mucus barrier, regulate the gut microbiome, and relieve inflammation. This suggests that EPA may be a promising adjunctive therapy for ulcerative colitis.

Dietary cholesterol drives fatty liver-associated liver cancer by modulating gut microbiota and metabolites

Xiang Zhang et al.

Summary: High dietary cholesterol leads to sequential progression of steatosis, steatohepatitis, fibrosis and eventually HCC in mice, concomitant with insulin resistance. Cholesterol-induced NAFLD-HCC formation is associated with gut microbiota dysbiosis, with specific bacterial composition changes between stages of liver disease. Alterations in gut bacterial metabolites were also observed with dietary cholesterol intake. Therapies targeting cholesterol and gut microbiota may be effective for preventing NAFLD-HCC.

Endotoxinemia Accelerates Atherosclerosis Through Electrostatic Charge-Mediated Monocyte Adhesion

Ariane Schumski et al.

Summary: Acute infection increases the risk of cardiovascular complications, with lipopolysaccharide playing a role in accelerating vascular inflammation through the activation of circulating immune cells. Histone H2a associated with NETs is shown to mediate charge-dependent monocyte adhesion and accelerate atherosclerosis during endotoxinemia.

Three phytosterols from sweet potato inhibit MCF7-xenograft-tumor growth through modulating gut microbiota homeostasis and SCFAs secretion

Bing Han et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that daucosterol linolenate (DLA), daucosterol linoleate (DL), and daucosterol palmitate (DP) from sweet potato exhibit anti-breast tumor effects in MCF-7 xenograft nude mice by modulating gut microbiota, producing short-chain fatty acids, and impacting cancer-related protein expression. These phytosterols may serve as gut microbiota regulators for breast cancer prevention.

Stigmasterol Restores the Balance of Treg/Th17 Cells by Activating the Butyrate-PPARγ Axis in Colitis

Shuting Wen et al.

Summary: Stigmasterol treatment restores the Treg/Th17 balance and alters the gut microbiota, while also enhancing the production of SCFAs, particularly butyrate. Mechanistically, butyrate activates PPAR gamma and reprograms energy metabolism to promote Treg differentiation and inhibit Th17 differentiation, thus attenuating IBD.

High Vaccenic Acid Content in Beef Fat Attenuates High Fat and High Carbohydrate Western Diet Induced Changes in Lipid Metabolism and Gut Microbiota in Pigs

Vijay P. Singh et al.

Summary: High-fat diets can influence gut microbial composition, while beef fat rich in vaccenic acid may have insulin-sensitizing effects, increase HDL cholesterol, reduce postprandial plasma TG, and protect against high-fat diet-induced changes in gut microbial composition in low birth weight pigs. Further research is needed to understand the mechanisms behind natural trans fats' effects on gut dysbiosis.

Larissa de Brito Medeiros et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that naturally and industrially produced trans-fatty acids have distinct effects on metabolic parameters and gut microbiota of rats. Industrial trans-fatty acids intake resulted in reduced triglycerides and VLDL levels, while natural trans-fatty acids intake showed hepatoprotective effects and increased anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10 levels. Additionally, the gut microbiota composition was significantly different among the dietary groups.
