Temperature evolution from stratified- to well-mixed condition inside a fire compartment with an opening subjected to external wind

Fei Ren et al.

Summary: It is well known that compartment fires evolve from stratified to well-mixed conditions as the heat release rate increases. However, the evolution of a compartment fire with an opening subjected to external wind has not been quantified, despite its practical significance. This study experimentally investigated the evolution of temperature spatial non-uniformness inside a fire compartment with varying opening dimensions, heat release rates, and wind speeds. The findings show that the temperature difference between the upper and lower part of the compartment initially increases then decreases with increasing heat release rate, and decreases with increasing wind speed.

Experimental study on flame pulsation behavior of external venting facade fire ejected from opening of a compartment

Xiepeng Sun et al.

Summary: This study experimentally investigated the flame pulsation of external venting facade fires ejected from openings of compartments, finding that the flame pulsation magnitude and frequency were related to heat release rates and opening sizes. A new formula was proposed to characterize the flame pulsation frequency, showing that it is well represented by a non-dimensional function between Strouhal and Froude numbers. This research provides essential knowledge for understanding the behavior of flame pulsation in external venting facade fires.

Flame behavior from an opening at different elevations on the facade wall of a fire compartment

Kaihua Lu et al.

Summary: Through experiments and computational fluid dynamics simulations, it is found that there are certain regularities in the flame characteristics of openings at different heights on the facade wall of a fire compartment. The distance of the flame base from the bottom of the opening gradually decreases with increasing opening elevation, and the increasing elevation of the opening contributes to decreasing mean critical heat release rate for flame ejection.

Development of a new intermediate-scale box test on sandwich panel products compared with ISO 13784-1 room test and EN 13501-1 classification system

Hideki Yoshioka et al.

Summary: This paper presents a new intermediate-scale box test for sandwich panel products and compares it with existing standards such as ISO 13784-1 and EN 13501-1. The results indicate a good correlation between the new test method and ISO 13784-1, as well as suggest a new tentative classification system based on limited experimental results.

Temperature evolution and external flame height through the opening of fire compartment: Scale effect on heat/mass transfer and revisited models

Xiepeng Sun et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the temperature evolution inside a compartment and the external flame height ejected through the opening, revealing a scale effect on the problem and proposing models for predicting the upper-part temperature evolution. The external flame height shows significant differences for various compartment scales, leading to the proposal of a general model characterizing the external flame height with a newly defined dimensionless excess heat release rate.
