MicroRNA Biophysically Modulates Cardiac Action Potential by Direct Binding to Ion Channel

Dandan Yang et al.

Summary: This study reveals a novel biophysical action of endogenous miRs in modulating cardiac electrophysiology through noncanonical mechanisms. Endogenous miR1 physically binds with cardiac membrane protein Kir2.1, suppressing I-K1 and affecting action potential of cardiomyocytes. The findings suggest that miRs may be involved in the pathogenesis of cardiac arrhythmias by regulating ion channel physiology and pathology.

Further insights into the molecular complexity of the human sinus node-The role of 'novel' transcription factors and microRNAs

Abimbola J. Aminu et al.

Summary: The study identified key transcription factors (TFs) and cell markers in the sinus node (SN) that are significantly more expressed compared to the right atrial tissue (RA), which play a role in regulating ion channels and immune cells. Some TFs were predicted to regulate the expression of key ion channel HNC4, while cell markers were found to have complex interactions with these TFs.

Genetic Complexity of Sinoatrial Node Dysfunction

Michael J. Wallace et al.

Summary: The pacemaker cells in the cardiac sinoatrial node are crucial for normal cardiac automaticity, and dysfunction can lead to various heart rhythm disorders. Current management of sinoatrial node dysfunction focuses on symptom relief and pacemaker implantation as needed, highlighting the need to better understand the underlying mechanisms of the condition for improved patient care.

Speeding Up the Heart? Traditional and New Perspectives on HCN4 Function

Summary: The sinoatrial node (SAN) is the primary pacemaker of the heart, with spontaneously active pacemaker cells generating the intrinsic heartbeat by initiating electrical activity. The firing rate of pacemaker cells, crucial for determining the heart rate, is regulated by the autonomic nervous system through the sympathetic and parasympathetic branches, accelerating or decelerating the slow diastolic depolarization.
