Heavy metals in soil-like material from landfills - Resource or contaminants?

Ingo Holzle et al.

Summary: This study provides a global overview of the soil-like material in landfills in terms of heavy metal concentrations and resource potential. The study finds that the average concentrations of arsenic, zinc, and nickel are similar worldwide, while lead, copper, and mercury show significant differences between landfills. Elevated zinc concentrations are of concern for reuse in earthworks. Overall, heavy metal concentrations in soil-like material are not comparable to those found in ores.

CEDALION AND ORION: A TWO-STEP DECISION SUPPORT TOOL TO ALLOW SMART ELFM PROJECT PLANNING, PRIORITISATION AND SUSTAINABLE INTERIM USE (RAWFILL PROJECT)

Eddy Wille et al.

Summary: (Enhanced) landfill mining (ELFM) is a sustainable waste management strategy that promotes circular economy and reduces environmental risks associated with landfills. RAWFILL has developed tools such as Enhanced Landfill Inventory Framework (ELIF), innovative landfill characterization methodology combining geophysical imaging and guided sampling (HADESS), and a two-step Decision Support Tool (DST) to facilitate smart (ELFM) project planning and prioritization. These tools improve decision-making by increasing efficiency and reducing uncertainty in the (ELFM) projects.

Quantitative determination of energy potential of refuse derived fuel from the waste recovered from Indian landfill

Venkata Ravi Sankar Cheela et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the energy recovery potential of aged waste recovered from landfills, showing that RDF can be used as a feedstock for energy recovery. The results will assist policy makers and local authorities in designing strategies for resource and energy recovery from landfills in various urban areas.

Ameliorating effect of nitrate on nitrite inhibition for denitrifying P-accumulating organisms

Ivar Zekker et al.

Summary: Lowering air supply and organic carbon demand are key factors in reducing wastewater treatment costs and preventing eutrophication. Utilizing denitrifying polyphosphate accumulating organisms (DPAOs) in the denitrifying PO4-- removal (DPR) process with nitrate has shown efficient removal of COD, nitrogen, and phosphorus in wastewater with high nitrite and nitrate content. The use of nitrate attenuation against nitrite toxicity can be economically justified in full-scale treatment applications.

Activated Ailanthus altissima Sawdust as Adsorbent for Removal of Acid Yellow 29 from Wastewater: Kinetics Approach

Najeeb Ur Rahman et al.

Summary: The study showed that chemically activated Ailanthus altissima sawdust can be used as a suitable adsorbent for removing harmful substances, especially dyes, from polluted waters. The Freundlich model and pseudo second-order kinetic model were found to be the most suitable for calculating adsorption parameters.

Adsorption-Membrane Hybrid Approach for the Removal of Azithromycin from Water: An Attempt to Minimize Drug Resistance Problem

Muhammad Wahab et al.

Summary: In this study, activated carbon and magnetic activated carbon were used for the removal of antibiotic Azithromycin from aqueous solution. The optimal conditions and isothermal data indicated favorable adsorption of AZM on both adsorbents. When evaluating the effect of AC and MAC on membrane parameters, it was found that the surface area of AC was greater than MAC, resulting in higher percent retention of AZM for AC/UF, AC/NF, and AC/RO treatments.

Palladium-Supported Zirconia-Based Catalytic Degradation of Rhodamine-B Dye from Wastewater

Salma Jabeen et al.

Summary: Pd/ZrO2 exhibited good catalytic activity and stability in the degradation of dyes, with thermodynamic parameters indicating the exothermic and spontaneous nature of the reaction. The catalyst showed suitable affinity for dye degradation, making it a promising candidate for further validation and application in various dye removal processes.
